COUNCIL APPROVES SONIA GUTIÉRREZ CAMPUS WAY
Today, the Council of the District of Columbia gave final approval to the, “Sonia Gutiérrez Campus Way Designation Act of 2014.” The Act will symbolically designate the 500 block of V Street NE to align with the Carlos Rosario Public Charter School’s Sonia Gutiérrez Campus.
The Carlos Rosario Public Charter School is a national award-winning institution that serves more than 2,500 students annually and has transformed the lives of more than 70,000 immigrants for over forty years. In 1998, the school became the first adult public Charter School in the nation and in 2013, the school opened a second campus in Ward 5, named after founding educator Sonia Gutiérrez, that houses a professional grade culinary arts and technology programs.
“It is only fitting that we honor the great work of the institution and recognize the newly built campus and its mission to prepare our diverse immigrant population to learn and succeed in a nation where immigrants have played an integral role in the foundation of America,” stated Councilmember Anita Bonds.
The Act, authored by Councilmember Anita Bonds, was co-introduced by Kenyan McDuffie and co-sponsored by Councilmembers Muriel Bowser, Yvette Alexander, and Vincent Orange, will now be sent to Mayor Vincent C. Gray for signature.
