Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center

September 9, 2013

WELCOME BACK!

We understand how busy you are, so this is just a quick reminder that the Discovery Center is eager to help you bring more science into your students’ lives again this year. Here’s how we do that:

Field Trips to the Discovery Center:  With more than 160 hands-on, interactive exhibits to intrigue and inspire them, your students will really soak in the science while they are here. Admission is just $3 per student, and students from all Title 1 schools are admitted free.  For every 5 students in your group, one chaperone will also be admitted free.  (Chaperones must be at least 18 years old and unaccompanied by younger children.)  To set up your field trip, or for more details, just call Anne Church at 208-287-4236 –or email a.ch...@dcidaho.org.

Free Science Demonstrations: Our “demos” are always a hit with students, and this year the 20-30 minute presentations are free all year long.  We offer a different demo each month, reflecting the museum’s theme that month:

September:  States of Matter; October:  Forces; November: Health & Fitness; December: Inventing & Toys; January: Cold; February: Paper & Printing; March:  Electricity & Magnetism; April:  Air & Vacuums; May:  Biology; June:  Light; July:  Space; August:  Math

To include a free demo in your field trip, just be sure to mention it when you make your reservation.

Outreach Events:  Whether you want a full-day science fair for hundreds of folks or just an exciting science show for your class, the DCI Outreach Team is eager to deliver entertaining science education and activity!  Just call our Education Director, Woody Sobey, at 208-287-4234 to learn all the options.

Science After School:  Students in schools from East Boise to Kuna were delighted with “Science After School” last year – and your students would love it too. When you host Science After School, Discovery Center staff arrive once a week to bring science education, hands-on experiments, and interactive fun.  The program can be tailored to different grade levels or time spans, with classes meeting for one hour immediately after school for 4-8 weeks.  Parents pick up the tab for students who choose to participate ($10 a week), DCI handles the paperwork and supplies, and your school provides only the classroom.  To arrange for Science After School to visit your own building this year, just call 287-4236.

Best wishes for a rewarding and successful school year from everyone at DCI!
