Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center
January 12, 2012
Welcome back!
We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!
“Resonance Rings” takes center stage at the Discovery Center
Our new exhibit is “Resonance Rings,” a look into how a small force gets amplified in certain situations, and related waves and vibrations. This exciting exhibit will surely intrigue your students.
Field trips & Outreach events
Planning a field trip to the Discovery Center? Just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236. Admission for school groups of 10 or more is just $2.50 per student, and free for Title 1 schools. In January, our featured demonstration is the lively (and loud) “Sound FX,” a very interactive tie-in to the “Resonance Rings” exhibit. In February and March, we present “Volts & Jolts,” an exploration in to electricity. From January–March, there is a $25 fee per demonstration. Our April-May presentation about vacuums, “All about Nothing,” costs $35. To have Discovery Center science (and fun!) brought to your school through an Outreach presentation, just contact t.po...@dcidaho.org. Four shows are available, including the popular new “Crazy Critters” about animal adaptations. Details are available at www.dcidaho.org/outreach.
Deadline approaches for the Tournament of Innovation
The deadline for schools and school districts to sign up for the Tournament of Innovation (our redesigned STEM competition) is January 16. For the first time, this challenge is open to grades K-12. The public is invited to inspect contest entries on February 18 at the BSU Engineering Building in Boise or on February 25 at the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls. For details about this rewarding event, please contact coordinator Tori Powers at (208) 287-4235 or t.po...@dcidaho.org.
Spring Break? A great time to spring into science!
Spring break is a great time for students in grades 1-4 to dig deep into science during our week-long Spring Break Camp, which runs March 26-30, from 9 am-4:30 pm each day at the Discovery Center. The cost is just $165 for DCI members/$195 for nonmembers. The featured science varies from day to day, as does the fun. For details, just contact a.ch...@dcidaho.org, or call 287-4236.
Introducing “Science After School”
The Discovery Center now offers “Science After School,” an 8-week series of one-hour classes held immediately after school for pre-registered students. The “Crazy Chem” series has already begun at Riverstone International School, and classes start next week at Joplin Elementary. The response has been enthusiastic, and we look forward to bringing “Science After School” to other schools soon.
