Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center

April 6, 2012

Don’t Miss Robotics Week - April 9-14

In conjunction with national Robotics Week, the Discovery Center will focus on this exciting science all next week.  Special activities and demonstrations will take place on the museum floor, and Saturday, April 14, will feature special Robot Challenges.  This is a great opportunity for students who are intrigued by robotics to learn what the excitement is all about -- in the interactive, hands-on way that made the Discovery Center famous.

Families are loving “Sunday Science Adventures”

The Discovery Center’s newest feature, “Sunday Science Adventures,” has already tackled topics ranging from bubbles to genetics.  Each week the Adventure focuses on a single topic, with separate activities geared to each age group.  So while preschoolers are happily blowing bubbles, teens are investigating the chemical composition of various bubble solutions. Our Sunday Adventures are presented at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. each Sunday.  The Discovery Center is closed on Easter, but on April 15, adventurous families will explore Robotics.

Field trips & Outreach events

Planning a field trip to the Discovery Center? Just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236.  Admission for school groups is just $3 per student, and free for Title 1 schools.  Adult chaperones are admitted free.  Our April-May demonstration about vacuums, “All about Nothing,” can be presented for $35.  To have Discovery Center science (and fun!) brought right to your school through an Outreach presentation,  just contact Tori Powers at t.po...@dcidaho.org.  Four different shows are available, now and throughout the summer. For details, check out www.dcidaho.org/outreach.

No kidding- It’s science!

Teachers and parents and grownups of all kinds have made “Adult Night” at the Discovery Center a real hit! Here’s your chance to really get to know the museum – to even take a ride in the popular Air Brake Chair – with no one to chaperone.  Drop by on April 25 to learn about “The Science of Brewing” or just to have a darn good time.  It all starts at 6 p.m; tickets are $10 at the door, $8 for Discovery Center members, and that includes your first “brew.”   Grab something tasty from vendors’ food trucks parked just outside the door and join us inside for some grown-up fun and “don’t try this at home” science!
