Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center
August 22, 2012
Welcome back! We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. Now we’re eager to bring you up to date on events at the Discovery Center and how they fit into your new lesson plans.
Be among the first to see BODIES REVEALED at the Discovery Center
The Discovery Center is proud to make the phenomenal exhibition BODIES REVEALED available to teachers and students in the Treasure Valley this fall and winter, September 29- March 31. BODIES REVEALED features real, whole and partial human body specimens, meticulously prepared to let visitors view and appreciate the complexity of their own bodies. Sponsored by St. Alphonsus Health System, the exhibition is especially appropriate for students in grades 4 and up. BODIES REVEALED is a remarkable teaching tool, dramatically presenting the effects of various lifestyle choices, such as the lungs of a smoker compared to those of a nonsmoker. Teachers from public and private schools are invited to a free preview of BODIES REVEALED on Wednesday, September 26, from 6-9 p.m. – before the exhibition even opens to the public! Since space is limited, please register for this preview at https://46684a.blackbaudhosting.com/46684A/BR-Teacher-Preview.
Special field trip rates help put this exhibition within reach of your entire class. With advance reservations, school groups will pay just $10 per student, $7 per adult chaperone. Title 1 schools will pay just $7 per student or adult. (Regular admission will be $18 for adults and $14 for youth age 4- 17.) These rates include admission to the Discovery Center’s most classic exhibits, which will be housed in one exhibit hall to make room for BODIES REVEALED. Be sure to include a visit to DCI and BODIES REVEALED in your plans for this year!
Field trips & Outreach events
The Discovery Center will experience some exciting changes in preparation for BODIES REVEALED, so no field trips will be scheduled during September, but reservations for later dates can be made at any time. To schedule a field trip, just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, the grade level and number in your group, and whether you are coming to see BODIES REVEALED or just the classic DCI exhibits -– or call Anne Church at 287-4236. Discovery Center science (and fun!) can be brought right to your school or event through an Outreach presentation at any time. Just contact Tori Powers at t.po...@dcidaho.org. For details on these exciting, interactive performances, check out www.dcidaho.org/outreach.
Remember to register for Teachers’ Night Out on September 20
All teachers from public and private schools are invited to Teachers’ Night Out, the annual teacher appreciation event featuring free food, entertainment and information about local non-profits. The fun goes from 4:30 – 7 p.m. on September 20 – and this year offers a great opportunity to explore the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy downtown as well. You must remember to register online starting September 1 at http://teachersnightout2012.eventbrite.com. (Registration will close when the event reaches capacity.) Teachers’ Night Out is presented by the Cultural Network, a group of museums, libraries and educational and cultural organizations in the Boise area.
