Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center

February 8, 2012

Exciting times at the Discovery Center!

There’s always a lot going on at the Discovery Center. Our popular, pint-size market reopened yesterday as “Freddy’s Discovery Market,” with a bold new look courtesy of a grant from Fred Meyer Foundation. An ever-changing variety of educational activities adds excitement to the museum floor, and the monthly new “Adult Night” draws an after-hours crowd that enjoys a grown-up atmosphere (and grown-up beverages) while they explore the exhibits – and some “don’t try this at home” science.  Stop by sometime soon – we’ll be offering expanded hours beginning in March!

Field trips & Outreach events

Planning a field trip to the Discovery Center? Just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236.  Admission for school groups is just $3 per student, and free for Title 1 schools.  Our featured demonstration for February and March is the exciting “Volts & Jolts” exploration of electricity.  There is a $25 fee to have this demonstration presented to your group.   Our April-May presentation about vacuums, “All about Nothing,” will cost $35.  To have Discovery Center science (and fun!) brought to your school through an Outreach presentation, just contact t.po...@dcidaho.org.  Four different shows are available, including the popular new “Crazy Critters” about animal adaptations.  Details are available at www.dcidaho.org/outreach.

Check out the Tournament of Innovation

Everyone is invited to inspect the intriguing entries in the Tournament of Innovation contest, which will be on display on February 18 at the BSU Engineering Building in Boise and on February 25 at the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls.  For details about the public conclusion to this rewarding event, please contact coordinator Tori Powers at (208) 287-4235 or t.po...@dcidaho.org

It’s almost time to spring into science!

Spring break is a great time for students in grades 1-4 to dig deep into science during our week-long Spring Break Camp, which runs March 26-30, from 9 am-4:30 pm each day at the Discovery Center. The cost is just $165 for DCI members/$195 for nonmembers.  The featured science varies from day to day, as does the fun.  For details, just contact a.ch...@dcidaho.org, or call 287-4236.

“Science After School” gets a gold star

The Discovery Center’s new “Science After School” program is getting rave reviews from principals, parents, and students alike.  “Crazy Chem,” the first 8-week series of one-hour classes, is held right after school at Riverstone International School and Joplin Elementary.  The next series, “Physics is Fun,” will begin in March.  For details on bringing “Science After School” to your school, contact DCI instructor Pam Garman at s...@dcidaho.org.
