Teacher News from the Discovery Center of Idaho

February 2014

Field Trips:    Your students will really soak in the science while they explore DCI CLASSICS, our current exhibit, which features exhibits that delighted students 25 years ago when DCI first opened. With an advanced reservation, school field trip admission is just $3 per student, and students from all Title 1 schools are admitted free.  For every 5 students in a group, one chaperone will also be admitted free.  To set up your field trip, or for more details, call Anne Church at 208-287-4236 –or email a.ch...@dcidaho.org.

Free Science Demonstrations: Add a free science “demo” to your visit at no cost!  We offer free 20-minute presentations each day.  Presented at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays, and at 2 p.m.  Saturdays and Sundays, the demos include:  February: Paper &Printing; March: Electricity & Magnetism; April: Air & Vacuums; May: Biology; June: Medieval Battle Machines; July: Transportation (Air/Land/Water/Space); August: Genius, Polymath, Mathematical Relationships; September: Invention & Making; October: Perception & Light; November: Mechanics. To include a free demo in your field trip, be sure to mention it when you make your reservation.

Help Feed the Hungry Harmonograph:  Everyone loves the swirling Harmonograph and the designs it seems to draw on its own – but it gobbles up a lot of paper!  If your school has used paper that’s blank on one side, we could sure put it to great use.  The perfect size is 8-1/2” x 11”, but we can cut down larger sheets. We’d really appreciate any donations, especially delivered to our front desk!

Pretend it’s 1989!  With help from a generous donation from Fred Meyer, we’re celebrating our 25th birthday by lowering Sunday admissions on February 9, 16, and 23 to our 1989 price -- $3 per person.  Please encourage your student and their families to drop by from noon -5 pm on Sundays this month!

Science At Your School:  DCI Educator, Shelley Best, is eager to bring entertaining, educational science to your school event.  Whether you want a full-day science fair for hundreds of folks or an exciting science show for your class, call DCI Outreach at 208-287-4235. Fees range from $200 for a single, hands-on science activity to $700 for a full-day science festival, and there’s no charge for travel.

Science After School:  This dynamic program brings Discovery Center staff to your school once a week with hands-on experiments and interactive fun.  The program can be tailored to different grade levels, with classes meeting for one hour immediately after school for 6 weeks.  Parents pick up the tab for students who choose to participate ($60), DCI handles the paperwork and supplies, and your school provides only a classroom.  To arrange for Science After School at your building, call 287-4236.
