Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center of Idaho

November 2, 2011

November brings two special events to the Discovery Center

The Association of Operating Room Nurses presents “Life in the Operating Room” at DCI on Saturday, November 5, from 10 am-5 pm. Visitors can try their hand at (bloodless) keyhole surgery, learn about first aid, CPR, and what injuries that bicycle helmet can prevent.  Operating room nurses will be on hand, dressed in their medical garb, to showcase a typical day in a St. Luke’s operating room. Children get to wear operating room gowns to assist a nurse with basic medical procedures. Included with regular DCI admission, this event is appropriate for children from ages 7 to 17.

Rock hounds of all ages will enjoy “Geology Day” at the Discovery Center, tentatively set for Saturday, November 19, from 10 am to 5 pm.  BSU’s Geology Club will be on hand to answer questions and help conduct special, hands-on activities, and of course there will be rocks of all kinds to examine.  Geology Day is included in regular Discovery Center admission.

Field Trips

Planning a field trip to the Discovery Center? Just email a.ch...@scidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236.  Admission for school groups of 10 or more is just $2.50 per student, and free for Title 1 schools.  Through December, our lively 20–minute demonstrations are also free for all groups. In November and December, the popular “Matter & Molecules” demonstration takes center stage. From January–March, there is a $25 fee per demonstration.  January features “Sound FX” and in February-March, “Volts & Jolts.” Our April-May presentation about vacuums, “All about Nothing,” costs $35.

Calling all inventors, Grades K-12!

Your most creative, innovative students will get a chance to showcase their talents in The Discovery Center’s redesigned invention contest, now renamed The Tournament of Innovation and including a new regional partner, the Palouse Discovery Science Center.  For the first time, this challenge is open to students in grades K-12. For more information on this rewarding event, contact coordinator Tori Powers at (208) 287-4235 or t.po...@dcidaho.org.  All entries must be received by December 1, 2011.
