Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center

May 17, 2012

BODIES REVEALED opens at the Discovery Center  September  29

They’re coming! The phenomenal exhibition BODIES REVEALED features real, whole and partial human body specimens that have been meticulously prepared and preserved, allowing visitors to view and appreciate the complexity of their own bodies. Sponsored by St. Alphonsus Health System, the exhibition is especially appropriate for students in grades 4 and up.  BODIES REVEALED is a remarkable teaching tool for subjects ranging from anatomy to health education, dramatically presenting the effects of various lifestyle choices, such as the lungs of a smoker compared to those of a nonsmoker.  Regular admission to DCI and BODIES REVEALED will be $18 for adults and $14 for youths up to age 17, but special field trip rates will be available to put this educational exhibition within reach of as many students as possible.  Be sure to include a visit to DCI and BODIES REVEALED in your lesson plans for next year!

Watch for it … VISUAL FX

DCI’s summer exhibition, Visual FX, will explore the relationships between optics, images and human visual perception.  Exhibits creating images using refractive optics, pinholes and concave mirrors will stand alongside exhibits exploring such aspects of human perception as stereo vision, color perception and retinal memory. Visitors will experiment with lenses, telescopes and pinholes, exploring how these devices interact with light to create images. With these physical principles as a foundation, the exhibition then looks into the area of human visual perception. Visual perception exhibits will explore how the image formed by the eye’s pupil and lens are transmitted, manipulated and interpreted to result in our perceptions of form, dimension, color and motion. Using visual illusions, additional exhibits will fool our eye-brain and demonstrate some of the interpretive processes at work in our perception of the world.

Field trips & Outreach events

Summer is a great time for a field trip to the Discovery Center for groups of all kinds. Just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236.  Until September 29, admission for school groups is just $3 per student, and free for Title 1 schools.  Non-school groups pay just $5 per person, ages 4-17.  Adult chaperones are admitted free.  To have Discovery Center science (and fun!) brought right to your own event through an Outreach presentation,  just contact Tori Powers at t.po...@dcidaho.org.  For details, check out www.dcidaho.org/outreach.

Adult (Teachers) Night Out

DCI’s Adult Night events have been wildly successful. Adult Nights will continue throughout the summer, set for June 28 and August 30.  We hope you will find time to stop in for an entertaining evening of grown-up fun and beverages – and science – with no one small to chaperone.

We also hope you all have a wonderful, restful summer!  You’ve certainly earned it!
