Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center
December 1, 2012
FREE science demonstrations this spring
In April, DCI will once again present our four most popular science demonstrations – free of charge! Simple Machines, States of Matter (also called Matter & Molecules), All about Nothing (focusing on vacuums) and Volts & Jolts will be offered on a rotating basis this spring. But there’s always lots of interactive fun at the Discovery Center, even with a major exhibition going on. Right now the museum is filled with more than 65 hands-on exhibits, old favorites like the Bed of Nails and some exciting new challenges too. And you can’t beat the price: your class can explore the “classic” Discovery Center exhibits for just $3 per student, with teacher and chaperones admitted free. If yours is a Title 1 school, admission is simply free. (If you do want to include BODIES REVEALED in your visit, the total admission will be just $10 per student, $7 per adult chaperone. Title 1 schools will pay just $7 per student or adult.) To schedule a field trip, just email a.ch...@dcidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, the grade level and number in your group, your Title 1 status, and whether you are coming to see the classic DCI exhibits or BODIES REVEALED -– or call Anne Church at (208) 287-4236.
Holiday daycamps keep your students merry and bright
Interactive science fun and exploration will keep your students thinking during the upcoming holidays. DCI’s Winter Whirlwind (December 26-28) and Spring Break Camp (March 25-29) will fill their “days off” with active investigation and learning. The BODIES REVEALED exhibition is not included in these camps – but all sorts of scientific adventure will be! Details at www.dcidaho.org.
Science comes to school
Got some would-be scientists in your class, eager for more science than you can provide? Science After School will fill that gap. When your school hosts a Science After School program, carefully-trained Discovery Center staff arrive once a week to bring science education, hands-on experiments, and interactive fun. Geared for Grades 1-4, each class meets for one hour immediately after school, once a week for 8 weeks. Parents pick up the $80 tab for each student who chooses to participate, DCI handles the paperwork, and your school provides only the classroom. For details, call Anne Church at 287-4236.
It’s time to invent!
This year’s Tournament of Innovation, our annual Science and Invention Competition for grades K-12, is fast approaching. The deadline for school/community group sign-up is DECEMBER 7, 2012. You don’t have to know what the individual projects are going to be yet, just that your group would like to send students to the Regional Competition (in Boise and Idaho Falls) on March 22-23. Details about how to host a local competition and prepare for the regional competition are on our website. Contact us at 208-287-4235 with your questions.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS from everyone at the Discovery Center!
