Teacher Updates from the Discovery Center

November 28, 2011

Welcome back!

We hope you all enjoyed a lovely and well-earned Thanksgiving Break!

“Resonance Rings” opens at the Discovery Center on December 9

Ringing in the holiday season at the Discovery Center will be “Resonance Rings,” a look into how a small force gets amplified in certain situations, and related waves and vibrations. This exciting exhibit will surely intrigue your students, making December a great time for a field trip – quick, while your class can still see a free “Matter & Molecules” demonstration as well.  (The free demos end on December 31; a $25 fee will be charged for each demo from January through March.)

Field trips & Outreach events

Planning a field trip to the Discovery Center? Just email a.ch...@scidaho.org with the date and time you prefer, and the grade level and number in your group– or call Anne Church at 287-4236.  Admission for school groups of 10 or more is just $2.50 per student, and free for Title 1 schools.  Through December, our lively 20–minute demonstration “Matter & Molecules” is free for all groups. From January–March, there is a $25 fee per demonstration.  January features “Sound FX” and in February-March, “Volts & Jolts.” Our April-May presentation about vacuums, “All about Nothing,” costs $35.  To have Discovery Center science (and fun!) brought to your school through an Outreach, just contact t.po...@scidaho.org.  Four shows are available, including the popular new “Crazy Critters” about animal adaptations.  Details are available at www.dcidaho.org/outreach.

Tournament of Innovation deadline approaches for young inventors

The deadline for applications for schools to participate in our redesigned invention contest, The Tournament of Innovation, is December 1.  (Applications from individual students will be accepted around mid-December.)  For the first time, this challenge is open to students in grades K-12.  If you need some extra time to complete the application, or just have questions about this rewarding event, please contact coordinator Tori Powers at (208) 287-4235 or t.po...@dcidaho.org

“Winter Whirlwind” is set to sweep students up... into Science!

The winter break is a great time for students in grades 1-4 to dig deep into science during our 3-day “Winter Whirlwind,” which runs December 19-21, from 9 am-4:30 each day at the Discovery Center. The cost is just $100 for DCI members/$115 for nonmembers.  The featured science varies from day to day, as does the fun.  For details, just contact a.ch...@scidaho.org, or call 287-4236.

Happy Holidays to you all from everyone at the Discovery Center!
