The Brandywine Conference & Visitors Bureau promotes tourism in Delaware County.  They have sought to brand the Delaware County area as “Brandywine Country”.  They have recently relocated their offices to the newly renovated 1753 Rose Tree Tavern at the edge of Rose Tree Park on Rt. 252 (Providence Road) and Rose Tree Road in Media.  Contact information:

I visited the offices today and met with Marilyn and her staff, as I wanted to get a better idea of what they do in the way of promotion of the area.  They are a membership organization.  The cost is $25/year.  They offer the following services:

1.  Brandywine County:  They publish “Brandywine County”, a 64 page full color guide to the region, with separate sections and listings as follows:  Calendar of Events, Sightseeing, Dining, Lodging, and Services.  The booklet is published twice a year, and is given mass distribution, at the offices, at the SAP offices in Newtown Square (they host thousands of visitors form out of state and foreign countries each year), at Ice Works in Aston (hosting national skating events), at the I-95 Visitors Center (set to re-open in September!), and in the Pennsylvania Visitors Centers throughout the state, and at member sites.  Members are encouraged to submit their listings for the publication.  The publication is also posted online at their website:  http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/794d5266#/794d5266/1 .  If you are a regular traveler, it is the type of publication you want to put your hands on first to give you the lay of the land.  There is a map that folds out as an endsheet.  If you want to reach tourists, it is the main way to do so in Delaware County – oops … Brandywine Country.

2.  Website:  The same listings and much more are offered at their website:  www.brandywinecountry.com .  Go visit and see if your site or event is listed.  If it is, you are free to expand on your description, and add additional pictures.  They post what you send them, but do not do independent research on your site; you need to update them about changes.  They are there to serve members.  If you are not listed, then contact Marilyn to find out what you need to do to get listed.  Or go visit her at the Rose Tree Tavern and get the tour and put faces with names.

3.  Brochure Placement and Design:  They have an extensive collection of tourism brochures at the Rose Tree Tavern, and help and advise members on brochure placement with the others sites they are in touch with.  If you want your brochure placed at other sites, then contact them to talk about what you need.  If you don’t have a brochure, but would like to develop one, they provide brochure design services.

I believe those are the basic services.  Please contact Marilyn (not me!) for questions or additional information.  I have always wanted to sit down with them and get the full explanation for what they do.  Having done so, I wanted to share it with you, the members of the Delaware County Public Historic & Preservation Network, and those that subscribe to this listserv.  As a reminder, this listserv is “an un-moderated discussion group where local historical societies, historic sites, preservation organizations, historic architectural review boards, historical commissions and their members, volunteers, staff and board members can exchange views, ideas, and information about local history and historic preservation in Delaware County and beyond.”  Our home page is:  https://sites.google.com/site/dchpnpa/home .  You receive items like this because you subscribed to that listserv.

Hope that’s helpful!  At some point I would like to do this same visit with the Delaware County Historical Society.  I know they exist, but don’t know what member services they provide.  If one of you is already up to speed on this organization, could you please share what you know with the group?

I believe that Brandywine Conference & Visitors Bureau, Delco Historical Society and this listserv (Delaware County Public Historic & Preservation Network ) are the three county wide efforts to link historic societies and sites.  And then there is Keith Lockhart’s wonderful website:  http://www.delawarecountyhistory.com/ .  While Keith’s site is not the “official” county history site, it is the best I’ve seen.  We should know what each one can do for participating sites and members, and how we can work together to promote history and preservation in Delaware County.

Thanks, Doug.

Not only do they do all of that.  BCVB's Barbara Lehman last year designed a rack card for us and found a printer!
