A Tree of Hope In Palestine   11/10/2009
In this issue: What is the Trees for Life Campaign in Palestine?
A Personal Story of Struggle

What Can You Do to Help?

What is Trees for Life?

The Numbers:

In 2008 alone, Olde City Imports and other businesses and non-profits around the globe selling Palestinian Fair Trade products raised the following through business/customer donation:

$55,930 USD
(10/22/2009 Exchange Rates)

This translates into a total planting of 14,419 trees in 348 farms in Palestine in 2009.

A Little Background

The Trees for Life Campaign was founded in 2003, and is administered and overseen by the Palestinian Fair Trade Association, a body accredited by Fair Trade Labeling Organization (FLO), Transfair, Fair for Life, and the American Fair Trade Federation, among others.  Farmers who have lost land, or are new to farming with little land are given priority when olive tree saplings are distributed.  For more information, please see the following links below:

A Story of Personal Struggle to Success:

Awad Mohammed Milhem and Qadriya Fayez Issa. Awad is a 47 years old farmer member of the ‘Anin cooperative in Jenin area. Awad is head of house hold for a family of 11 member. In 2004 Awad lost a total of 20 Dunams (1 Dunam = ~0.25 Acres) of olive trees to the Israeli fence of a nearby settlement. 5 Dunams of his olive grove were destroyed by putting up the fence and 15 Dunams fell behind the fence leaving him with rare and irregular access to his orchard. Qadriya , Awad’s wife received a 15 Dunoms of semi rocky land passed down to her from her fathers’ inheritance. Awad and Qadriay prepared Qadriya’s land for a new olive orchard and received 200 olive seedlings from PFTA’s Trees for Life program.

What you can do:

We currently donate $1 to the Canaan Scholarship Fund, and another $1 to the Trees For Life Campaign in Palestine for every tin sold.  In addition, a percentage of all other sales also contributes to these two programs, as well as the Micro-Loan program to empower women.  This is in addition to the fair trade premiums we pay for Palestinian Fair Trade products, as part of a broader effort to sustain the livelihoods of Palestinian farmers and the hope their success will bring future generations.
