Greetings to all, Below is a link about the the intensity of the electrical fields caused by smartmeters.  I don't know if the brand being tested is the one we will get.  I also have some information about increased risk of fires, particularly where wiring is old, but often the fires start with the smartmeter.  There is also premature failure of appliances and electronics.  DC residents currently do not have the right to opt out of smartmeters.  We are legally required to accept them.  Many have already been installed.  People's electricity bilols are skyrocketing.  I can't help but wonder if it is because of the power consumed by smartmeters, but it could partly be due to increased accuracy as Pepco claims.  The pilot study that was done and resulted in consumer approval for smartmeters was done with a different smartmeter and a different rate structure that what we are getting.  We don't have much time because smartmeters are scheduled to be in place throughout DC by the end of the year.  And then there is the inconvenience that those who have solar must have their smartmeter reprogrammed.

I am willing to host a meeting of those who want to create pressure for a right to opt out of smartmeters.  Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursday (evening) are my best days.  Those who do opt out will probably have extra meter reading charges and perhaps Pepco will dream up another charge.

Please forward to anyone you think would be interested.  Judy

Dear Mr. Jones, I hope this message finds you well.   I also hope OPC is taking the issue of increased fires and increased electronic equipment failures after installation of smartmeters seriously.  I am very concerned.  I would like to add the link below to the information on the table.

I have been unable to get the promised Pepco bill that shows a $50 charge for the smartmeter.  My friend's mother threw it out.

I recently learned that the tests conducted to show public support for smartmeters were conducted with meters other than the ones DC is getting and with rate structures other than the one we will get.  So what is the relevance of the tests?

While Pepco may be correct that some people are being undercharged by currently defective meters, here is another issue.  How much energy does it take to run a smartmeter and who pays for this?  If people are frugal about their electricity use, then what if having a smartmeter doubles or triples their bill?  Is that good policy?  Has this been considered?

I am willing to pay peak rates all of the time in exchange for the privilege of opting out of a smart meter.  I am even willing to go off the grid to avoid them.

What can a citizens group do to challenge current DC requirements that everyone must have a smartmeter?
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of DC.
