An impressive sign-guided tour of two buildings and four
renewable energy generation units, show a portfolio of
commercial, practical green technologies, not seen
together elsewhere.
This 1920’s Sears kit home was re-retrofitted in 1984 to
incorporate several solar features including solar water
heating and a 1.5 kW photovoltaics system. Sklar has also added
.5 kW of new solar electric peel-and-stick PV roofing shingles on
the metal roof on the front porch and a solar attic vent fan. The
PV systems on both roofs charge a large 24 gel cell battery bank.
A rear sunroom adds passive solar heating. The newest addition
to the home is a direct-exchange ground-coupled (geothermal)
heat pump. Energy efficient appliances such as the Westinghouse
Cabrio washier, cuts electric demand by 50%.
A freestanding solar greenhouse (which also has a PV-driven vent fan).
is heated by ground-mounted solar thermal panels. Each building collects
water runoff in barrels, and both buildings routinely add to the 20 year old
compost pile.
Behind the house,1 kW of solar electric roofing shingles on the small office
building along with a .5 kW small wind turbine and a 5 kW
hydrogen fuel cell for back up power. The newest addition
to the office builkding are the new R7+ gel-filled windows.. The office building
has an efficient ductless heat pump and incorporates CFLs and bundled
LED lighting and a solar light tube, and a pv-direct drive ceiling fan.
Sklar also owns a 2010 Prius with photovoltaics integrated into the roof, as
part of a special package offered by Toyota.
