If you have ideas about who we could nominate for a position on the Farm to School & School Gardens steering committee, please share those ideas! Here in our Northern Willamette Valley area, Karin Pfeiffer-Robinson has served on the committee (and may still be on the committee?!), so we have had a voice on this state-wide organization.

Recently, Megan Kemple was a leader in the fight to keep the whole program funded! Success was not guaranteed-but her work to keep us all informed and involved was SUCCESSFUL - full funding was voted for going forward, unanimously! Thanks, Megan, for your leadership!

Of course, also thanks to Karin for all your work on behalf of our farmers and students. We appreciate you!

[BTW, for a beautiful example of a position announcement, read this whole email - a statewide group can be tricky to support ongoing. This is a fine explanation of how to do that work.]

The Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Network is seeking new Steering Committee members!

The Steering committee:

  1. Provides guidance and oversight for the organization’s strategic plan, program priorities and other program related decisions;
  2. Prioritizes and make recommendations to state agencies & leadership and policy making bodies in Oregon, on behalf of the OFSSGN; and
  3. Provides administrative oversight as requested or required by the OFSSGN’s fiscal sponsor

These will be individuals or organizations that are members of the Network.

New Steering Committee members will be nominated and voted on annually by members, or more often if needed.  Each year, the current steering committee will request nominations, with two weeks to receive them.  The steering committee will then send out the names and biographies of those who have been nominated and are interested in serving on the steering committee.  All members will have at least one week to vote on nominees to the steering committee.   There will at least one week for voting, with an announcement of the new steering committee.

When voting, Network members will be requested to consider expertise, level of commitment to farm to school and school gardens, racial diversity, whether the nominee represents the beneficiaries of this work, representation from all parts of the state and a variety of sectors.  Steering Committee members must be active members of the Network.

All steering committee members are expected to participate in the majority of calls/ meetings, participate in management of the Network and conduct some work outside of meetings, including subcommittee calls, approximately one hour per month.

The steering committee will meet at least quarterly by phone or in person.

The steering committee will provide leadership by:

  • Keeping the Network focused on its mission
  • Convening the Network for prioritized activities
  • Approving projects or workgroups of the Network

Steering committee members will be asked to serve for one year.  There is no term limit. A two year term or longer is encouraged but not required, in order to provide continuity on the committee from year to year.

There is currently no compensation available through the Network for the Steering Committee.  This is voluntary service and compensated by the organizations people are associated with if those organizations are able to compensate their staff for this time.  If funding becomes available in the future, ideally, the steering committee would be compensated, especially as they take on projects.

If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself, please complete the attached form and return it to me directly at me...@oregonfarmtoschool.org by 10pm on July 25th.   It works best for the person being nominated to complete the form.

Thank you!
