We did something similar at DC813 and had our largest turnout. The organizer had a few basic challenges and talked about strategy. The next month, the challenges got harder and so forth, till we won Kommand&Kontrol last winter. We haven't done anything since then lol. 

So the reason I think for the big turn out is that the Internet can only teach someone something so much before they get overwhelmed on where to start. A lot of hackers are visual based, and a lot are hands on based and need some hand holding.

Yeah I think it'd be nice after a focused session to try to have something at each meeting to work on after what ever talk is given.
