Configuring Postgresql on Linux?

I've untarred the .tar.gz postgresql file, but I can't run the configure
program. It tells me: "Error: C compiler cannot create executables."
I tried selecitng a few different templates, and it told me the same
thing.
I ran the ./config.guess program, and it told me: i586-pc-linux-gnu
What do I do?
