A friend of mine, who is a doctor, wants to set up a video security /
survelliance system in his office. He and his partners rotate working
a late-night emergency shift and video survelliance for insurance (and
security) purposes is a bonus. He wants to be able to view the
cameras over a (secure) Internet connection using the web. Video
needs to be saved to security tape or hard disk, like a rotating log
file I suppose.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or information on hardware (video,
computer) and software to use? Any thoughts on the matter would also
be greatly appreciated.

I know solutions for my problem exist for NT, but we're looking at
using Linux to solve this situation for the obvious reasons we all use
Linux!!

Thanks.

There is an application for Video 4 Linux called :
camserv
http://cse.unl.edu/~jtravis/camserv.php3

which seems to be similar to what you want - I would suggest
using an intranet for real security.

Have a look at www.inodes.org (Nemesis) a complete video security program
for Linux developed by a local OSS developer who's family own a hotel.

Cheers, Grahame
