The Potomac Pedalers Touring Club Ride Schedule as published in the
current Pedal Patter follows. Please check the Pedal Patter for any
changes, corrections, etc. If you are a PPTC NON-member and frequently or
occassionally join the rides listed in this schedule, consider joining.
You must be a PPTC member to lead a ride. The more members, the greater
the potential for more members willing to lead rides. With more members
leading more rides, there will be more rides and more enjoyment for those
going on the rides. A PPTC membership application is at the end of this
post. See you on the road.
PPTC NON-MEMBERS may call (202)363-TOUR for information about PPTC,
other bicycling organizations and special events.
We always need people willing to lead rides. Over 400 cue-sheets of time
tested rides are available for ride leaders to select from. Cue sheets
and maps can be obtained from Ride Coordinators when you agree to lead a
ride. Names and telephone numbers for ride coordinators are listed on
page two of each Pedal Patter.
KEY TO RIDE CATEGORIES:
-----------------------
PPTC, in its endeavor to meet the desires of its very diverse
membership, has developed the following ride classifications.
D: Casual/Social; Avg Spd = 10 MPH; Dist = 10-20 mi
C: Short Touring; Avg Spd = 11 MPH; Dist = 20-30 mi
CC: Easy Touring; Avg Spd = 13 MPH; Dist = 30-50 mi
B: Touring; Avg Spd = 15 MPH; Dist = 30-70 mi
A: Fast Touring; Avg Spd = 17 MPH; Dist = 35-100 mi
AA: Training; Avg Spd = 19 MPH; Dist = 35-100 mi
Intervals of faster riding.
Hills attacked aggressively.
AX: Fast Training; Avg Spd = 20+ MPH; Dist = 10-20 mi
For race-oriented riders.
Must be Familiar with Pace-line
riding.
R: Radonneur; Avg Spd = 15 MPH; Dist = at least 123 mi
ATB: All Terrain; Speed & distances vary.
(H) indicates a hilly ride.
Ride leaders, unless they indicate otherwise, stay within
2 to 5 MPH of the advertised pace & distance.
KEY TO RIDE STARTING LOCATIONS:
-------------------------------
Detailed directions to ride start locations (with 3-letter code in
parentheses) are provided in the PPTC Reference Manual which is provided
to each PPTC member.
KEY TO TEMPERATURE/PRECIPITATION INDICATORS:
--------------------------------------------
Many rides will state minimum 'GO' conditions at the end of the first line
of the ride description. For example, 40deg/40% means the ride will go if
the predicted hig temperature is at least 40 degrees and the probability
of precipitation is lower than 40%. If the the predicted high temperature
is lower than 40 degrees OR the probability of precipitation is 50% or
higher, the ride will be cancelled. As a general rule, if it is raining or
snowing at the time any ride is to start, or if the roads are icy or snow
covered, the ride will be cancelled. The C&P forecast at 936-1212 two hours
befor the ride is to start will be the determinant. Call the ride leader if
in doubt.

Lunch at Harper's Ferry. For riders who want to tune up for the
Tour de Towpath or who won't be able to make that ride, this is
an abbreviated preview. We'll meet at the Noland's Ferry parking
lot (C&O canal mile 45) and ride 16 miles up to Harper's Ferry
for lunch. As always, there are no hills and no traffic to
contend with. We'll pass five locks along the way, as well as
the towns of Brunswick and Point of Rocks and the ruins of the
old Swayback Aqueduct. The towpath is nicely shaded from the sun
and the rain, so the ride will proceed regardless of the
forecast. Generally, heavier tires are recommended on the path
(1.25" or greater), but touring bikes can be used. (Directions:
From the Beltway, take I-270 towards Frederick. Exit at
Fingerboard Rd/Rt 80 and head west. Turn left on Buckeystown

lead the ride at a 15 mph pace and pull on request. As always,
helmets required.
Gus Creedon (703) 917-7272.

Antietam, it's true, but these routes avoid the hilliest areas.

it was 100 degrees and we ended up cutting it short. If it hits
100 again, I'll spring for the cold beverage of your choice.

In Pursuit of Passage Creek. Ride leader will attempt to
persuade the pack to pull her at a reasonable pace to proceed
through Edinburgh Gap and over rolling terrain. After propelling
ourselves past panoramic scenery, we'll plunge our painful pedal
pushers into picturesque Passage Creek. Here we'll partake in
the consumption of food and drink at the final pause of our
pursuit. When adequately digested we'll proceed the remaining 10
miles to the parking lot. Ride canceled if precipitation in
progress.

This is Not My Birthday Ride. A first for me. I am actually
leading a ride in which I did not make up the cue sheet. This is
an old, old cue sheet which goes to the Woodbine 7/11 and then
over to the 10 Oaks Highs. This ride has one of my favorite
finishes of any ride, so come out and find out what it is. Many
historical POI's on this ride. The cue sheet will go into more
detail, but just to wet your appetite, we will be traveling on
the Woodbine Ridge where Colonel Sykes made his famous attack on
Major Morgan in 1865.
Alan Adams (301) 570-3587.
A * 80 * VA * 9 AM * Loudoun Valley HS Purcellville (LOH)

Shepherdstown, but then head across the Potomac to visit
Sharpsburg, Antietam Battlefield and Keedysville. The return
will follow some scenic (and, yes, a bit hilly) Maryland roads
rarely explored by Virginia riders. Recrossing the Potomac at
Brunswick, we will take in a bit more history in Waterford.
Rick Bidstrup (703) 527-7738.

CC * 62 * MD * 9 AM * White's Ferry (WIF)
Up the River Ride. We'll crisscross the Potomac River five times
visiting Waterford, Brunswick, Harpers Ferry and Purcellville and
returning over White's Ferry. There is a brief stretch along the
tow path but you don't need fat tires. There will be some hills
but not really worth an "H". We will have three rest/food stops
including lunch in Harpers Ferry providing several excellent
opportunities to sign up to lead a ride and make your quota for a
ride leader's T-shirt before the end of the year.
Ben Oldham (301) 946-4346 or Louise Campbell-Blair (301)
530-3372.
CC/B(H) * 50ish * VA * 9:30 AM * Loudoun County HS (LOU)

CC * 30/40 * MD * 10 AM * Southern HS (HAR)
Harley Davidson Ride to Happy Harbor. Just kidding! I'll bring
the other bike, the one powered by twin pistons of flesh. This
is a very scenic ride through country roads, past horses, cattle
