Character Rigging in Maya – ACM SIGGRAPH Washington DC

DATE:   Thursday, January 21, 2016

FROM:  7:00pm-9:00pm

WHERE:  US Patent and Trademark Office (directions below)

The Washington DC chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH is proud to present Character Rigging in Maya with RaffaeleScaduto-Mendola, a 3D artist whose career has taken him to such studios as Dreamworks, Digital Domain, and Nickelodeon. Raffaele will provide an overview on some of the fundamental character rigging and solutions for use in Maya, with an emphasis on large, manageable and sustainable support for multiple and complex animation pipelines.

Character setup, also known as rigging, is the process of building the skeletal armature, skin deformations and muscle simulation and cloth, hair and props controls to 3D polygonal meshes, to enable a 3D animator to move characters of all shape, sizes and species. The process, used in 3D film-making and video game production, can also be extended to all types of 3D geometry to implement complex virtual 3D mechanism for motion simulation.

Biography

RaffaeleScaduto-Mendola is an artist and engineer with vast experience in 3D character content production for Feature Films, Commercials, and Interactive Apps. He also teaches several courses related to 3D character content production.

RaffaeleScaduto-Mendola developed a keen interest in 3D animation beginning in the early 90’s. As an early adopter of 3D on the Apple Macintosh, he began developing automated pipelines for 3D productions on networks consisting of Silicon Graphics Workstations. Since the early 2000's, Raffaele has been integrating those production tools on both Linux and Windows platforms. He has also worked directly with software developers, both in production companies starting with Rythm&Hues, Dreamworks and at Bell Labs/Lucent, to design, integrate and use customize tools related to 3D character animation including facial capture character rigs.

Raffaele has also been working on realtime visualization of data.

Please join us on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 7pm to 9pm at the US Patent and Trademark Office as we shine a bright light on the Dark Art of character rigging in Maya with RaffaeleScaduto-Mendola.

In order to offset costs for this event, we request a $5 contribution from non-members.
