Hi, all! We’re initiating a new mailing list, dc-ci-c...@googlegroups.com, for community news and announcements that are not specifically for coordination of our contact improv events.

I’m sorry we didn’t get around to doing this sooner. Since we started the dc...@python.org list we’ve had community members wanting to share ci-adjacent and other community news. We have needed and continue to need to keep the main list dedicated to DC-CI event coordination. However, we have a substantial and loyal group with lots of creativity, and now have a place to share the rest of our stuff on this new list.

You can visit the new list and read accumulated conversations at DC-CI Community - Google Groups. (When I post this it should be the first conversation; I’m making a hopefully rare exception of posting this to both lists.) You can also subscribe while you’re there, but to make subscription easy I’m going to be issuing email invitations to all those actively subscribed to this list, so you could just wait for the invitation and use a link in the invitation to subscribe.

I know we’re all perpetually contending with info overload, so you can just disregard the invitation if you’re not interested in hearing about community activities. But note that you can set your subscription to digest mode, so you get at most one consolidated message from the list per day.

We’re hoping many of us will join so it’s useful for sharing about what’s important to community members. And we’re hoping we all will use this new resource carefully, posting only what is important to you that you feel will be relevant to community members. We imagine the new list will include info about CI-adjacent activities, including awareness practices, performances and dances that would be of interest to community members, and important life events like moving into or away from the area, rooms for rent, and so on.

We ask that the new list (like the old one) not be subscribed to any other lists, and any promotional postings you post include a personal note specifically for the community, so that the communication continues to be personal.

We’re using Google Groups for the new list because it makes it easier for list members to manage and use their subscriptions. It’s easier to browse the accumulated conversations online, change your subscription settings, and even participate in conversations using the web interface.

Google Groups also makes it easier for us to share management of the list, which brings me to another invitation. Any of you who would like to help with DC-CI operations, we can share list manager privileges for the new list, enabling you to help respond to subscription requests and moderation of non-member postings to catch spam. Please let me know if you’d be interested in helping with that!

Keep an eye out for your invitation. If you don’t find it by the end of the day please check your spam folder, and know that you can visit the new list’s web interface at any time to request a subscription.

Let me know if you have questions or suggestions (as well as offers to help with managing the new list).

An update on the new mailing list invitation process: I tried to issue invitations to everyone, but only about ⅔ of the 322 addresses seem to have been sent. Google Groups regulates the invitation process in a funky way, so I don't know what happened to the other 1/3 (110 invitations). Because the omissions seem to be random I can't easily identify the addresses that need to be tried again, so I'm going to reissue them all. I am pretty confident that duplicate invitations will not be sent, but I'm not certain. If you do get a repeat please don't take it as pressure to enroll, and sorry about the additional traffic.

For those of you who haven't received an invite and want to join (or just want a way that's immediately convenient), you can visit  DC-CI Community - Google Groups and click on the "Ask to join the group" button to request membership.
