Hello DC-area nature friends,

We had fun on last month’s iNat night working together to navigate iNaturalist to answer questions such as—

  • How would we find the originator of Arachtober on iNaturalist and see her spider pix? And her amazing art?
  • Is October the busiest month for spider obs in the DC metro area?  How about in the southern hemisphere?
  • What are the DC metro area’s top 10 spiders on iNat?
  • Which arachnids are introduced to the DC Metro area? How do we find their native range?
  • What are some arachnids that are not spiders? (WOW! We looked at some cool ones!) Which ones are in our area?
  • How can I learn about common spider ID errors, so I can be a better spider identifier?
  • What are people saying about spiders on the iNaturalist forum?

If you’re not clear on how to navigate iNat on the desktop to find the answers, you can watch the recording to learn from the hive mind (web mind?) that was present!

In all the excitement I forgot to mention a fun game for taxonomy nerds.  Here is a screenshot from Metazooa:

The goal is to figure out each day’s mystery animal in as few guesses as possible.  Find out more at metazooa.com .  A similar one for plant nerds is metaflora: flora.metazooa.com .  Both are available on your computer and smartphone, and both are fun and challenging!
