Hi,

After a year of Java, I see some Python light glimmering on the work horizon :-)

So to resurrect my Python love, and possibly to resurrect this list (it seems to have died a little over the summer!)
I propose a social (pub) night , rather than worrying about a venue, lightning talks etc.

Going for 7pm some time in the next few weeks before the xmas socials set in, at the Llandoger Trow - due to its central location

(If there is a strong desire to pick a different venue - please respond with a suggestion and we could poll that too)

I hope to see some familiar faces there, and maybe some new ones too,
to talk of all things Python.

Cheers,
Ed Crewe

Hi,

OK I have picked one of the days when most people could make it.

So it is 7pm Monday 30th November at the Llandoger Trow.

I think it might be worth forking out for a Meetup group for DBBUG too, to increase its profile a bit
... I can make the pre-xmas social the first meetup.com flagged gathering.

Anybody have any opinions on that?

Cheers,
Ed

Ahh, one of the dates I can't do - shame.

How much is a meetup sub?

Hi Dan,

Yes sorry well I thought I could give you priority as group founder but I went for democracy - day two others could come who couldnt make it on any of your days.

Meetup costs £80 per year for the limited (50 membership - 4 admins) option - not cheap in my opinion but they have rather cornered the market.
So I am happy to pay the first year to raise DBBUGs profile a little.

I can make you, Rob Charlwood and Ben Glynn fellow admins as past DBBUG event organisers.
Having only ever hosted one of the DBBUG talk sessions, I am maybe not the most active of the early members of DBBUG
... but it has gone a bit quiet for a while, which is a little odd given how many Python programmers there are locally these days.

(Might even be worth rebadging it as Python DBBUG  ... to expand the remit a little? ... controversial I know!)

Cheers,
Ed

I can't make that day now.  Ah well.  All for using meetup, though that could further complicate things.  How about "third Tuesday of the month unless cancelled"?

Hi Nigel,

Its a nice idea but given the last DBBUG gathering was in April (and that was really a Bristol Wazoku launch)
I don't think we will be able to sustain a monthly gathering ... more likely quarterly is what we are aiming for ...
I think the group has generally averaged 4 or 5 meetings a year over the last 5 years.

Thanks,
Ed

Heh, giving me priority is a terrible idea!

Happy to chip in for the meetup sub if people think it's worthwhile. £80 is a cheap round of drink in London ;)

Hoping to get more involved again (though I haven't really done any Python or Django for a year now. Sad face.)

Hi,

OK I have added a meetup site and the proposed meetup to it at

http://www.meetup.com/Python-DBBUG-Django-Bristol-and-Bath-User-Group/events/226810850/

(Name was maybe a little long winded - whoops!)

Cheers,
Ed

Hi,

Just a reminder that DBBUG is meeting in the Llandoger Trow on Monday at 7pm
20 people have RSVP-ed so it should be a reasonably well attended social :-)

Apart from the socialising it might be a chance to plan a talks session for the new year.

Also DBBUG has a new meetup site at http://www.meetup.com/python-dbbug/
we have had 52 people join ... more than half of whom are new members.

So with a boosted membership and a slightly expanded Python remit to cover not just Django but perhaps a little of interest to all the Python DevOps
and Data scientists around Bristol ... I am looking forward to seeing you!

BTW: Rob and anyone else who has organised events in the past, or might want to in the future ... please join the site ... and I will make you an organizer with me and Dan.

Cheers,
Ed
...

Thanks for organising this, Ed!

Turns out I won't be able to make it - we have people over from SF in the London office that day, and I can't wiggle my way out of it... :(

Have one for me, and I'll catch up with y'all next time!

Dan
