IF you want a proprietary(here i mean to say software that costs) you can use total video converter. It has a wide range of audio and video support.I guess you can also edit audio. if no then you can always use audacity(opensource software) for the same.
for open source we have blender it allows to add tracks (audio and video )in fragmented form..At CRAVE it is been used a lot.
These are the once that we/i use there might be many more..
Hope it helps.

Which platform do u need the editor for? Only XP or it could be any platform.
For XP you may want to look at Pinnacle, For Mac Final Cut Pro and Linux the best one out there is Blender Sequence Editor unless things have changed from the past one year. Blender Sequence editor does have very basic audio editing features like clip, fade in / out, gain.

Cinelerra is one tool u might also want to check out ... but it has a sharp UI-Learning curve. But it's quite good too.

Blender Sequence Editor is good. I'd second that too if you just want something out of the box and don't have much time to explore. FCP for MacOSX is the best. For windows ... try and see if Jahshaka does the job. There is also, VirtualDub. I've never used it personally, but heard it's good. You might want to have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_software_packages#Video_editing

Linux also has a good tool called avidemux ... I've used it a while ago. It was better than cinelerra ... but this was like 3 yrs ago ... don't know how much it has improved by now.

Hi All,

Techtalk is a mailing list where people give you hints and ideas and lots of help of how you can do, what you want to do. It also encourages people to explore things yourself and make you better than what you are. We, at techtalk, believe in helping those who help themselves. It's **NOT** for spoon-feeding. The reason I joined this mailing list was to help students get out of the stupid system of being spood-fed for every damn thing, and to get help likewise. Atleast that's not the way things happened at DUCS or for that matter even at DBIT, and I am darn certain that this has helped me and many others immensely in the long run with my journey through engineering in DBIT and now in UTD and many others at different places right now (IITs/IISc, GeorgiaTech, MICA etc).

Spoon-feeding would make people miss out on what they'd learn if they did it themselves. If this is how it's going to be where people will even ask us questions, "What should I do for my BE project?" (metaphorically speaking) then it's a sign that DBIT has dropped its stature from where we left it to be, which is very disappointing for all the hardwork **WE** put in to making DBIT the name it is today.

People who really want to learn something out of their own will are most welcome to post as many questions as they like. And everyone here will be ready to help those who help themselves. That even goes to me. But people who help, are not here sitting idle where you can outsource work to them to find out 'the Dollar rate every minute like the stock indices'.

@Joy: You already got so many responses about video editing tools. Could you please share what *you* have found for us? We really want to know if there are other "free" tools than the ones what we suggested. Any updates??????????????? Do let us know.

PS: Admins, if you don't like my tone, feel free to remove me from the list, coz I do not want to help lazy students. I was trained by people in this very list to be proactive in what I want to learn about and I do not advocate the opposite.

Adios and Rock On \m/,
Savio.

I could eek out something through flash has anyone tried it instead of
using softwares that use exorbitant amount of memory.
though the process is very slow and it may not deliver the required
results.
There is the option in flash werewe can import and export media in
relation to screen.

me too against spoon feeding but i regret to say that people like u
and me are or would have been in the current scenario considered as
weird
and the number of people like us have been on a constant decline in
each going year .since university supports nothing but spoon-feeding
people say that if u try to learn by ur own world will go ahead in
time and you will be left behind you may do sumthing xtra but they r
of no use untill u gain ur degree
i personally feel that except for maths and sum numerical parts of
electronics people in the arts stream would do better in current
scenario.
The college theoretically going for spoon feeding but thanks to some
very good hearted students and chapters like ACM,IEEE,CSI..the
tradition has still not died.
comparing the vast experience difference btwn me and my seniors & ex-
students "Kudos 2 our ancestors" -->who keep coming back to help the
fellow juniors.

Hey...
When i talked to you in college, i got to know that you wanted to edit 1 flv file, right???
I want to say that i have done this already in windows. I first converted the flv file to avi (mpg or any other common format will also do). I dont remember which software i used to convert, but you get lots of s/w in d net. After that, i used virtualDUB. Its free, and provides all that you asked for, frame by frame editing, clip editing, deletion etc...when i used it, i just had to take out a clip from a movie, and it works like a charm. Very easy to use, the only thing you need to know in virtualdub is about the markup indicators (start n stop) search the Internet and you'll find out how easy it is. what more, you get the output in avi, mpg etc, and you can choose which codec you want to use, divx, xvid, and loads more, use it with a really good codec pack, which is not only for playback, but for encoding too. I use K-Lite mega codec pack to do that.

FYI: there is also direct flv import plugin for virtualdub (no links, search google), no spoonfeeding ;-) i'v used that, and it works for 9 out of 10 flv files. For the remaining 1, derz always convert and open option i told before.
