Goddess Gayatri is known to be the divine universal mother and also the mother of the Vedas (Vedamata). She is considered to be the divine energy that emanates from all things. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma needed to perform a yajna which required the presence of his wife, Goddess Saraswati, who was not available. Lord Brahma asked the priest to find a woman who could take the place of Goddess Saraswati so that the yajna could proceed.
