I use dBASE IV for some very important functions at my office (a
friend wrote some simple database programs many years ago for mailing
list sortation and analysis which I still rely on to this day) and I
have avoided Windows XP computers because I'm told that DOS
applications, like dBASE IV, will not run on them.

Unfortunately, I need to upgrade to a speedier computer and Windows XP
is my only current option. Is there a way to make dBASE IV function
"normally" on a Windows XP system? I often run dBASE programs that
send the results of computations directly to my printer. In other
cases I type "set print on" prior to typing in a (series of) commands.

I'm a real neophyte who only really understands what I do by rote, so
if you decide to answer, I'd sure appreciate it if you could keep your
explanation or advice in terms I can understand.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Sincerely,
John

P.S. -- Would you please cc: a copy of your reply to me directly
(dir...@aol.com) so I don't miss it posted on this group. Thanks!

John:
Dbase 4 will run from a dos window in XP. The problem is that the PATH
statement is no longer seems to be supported in XP. You may need to put all
the programs into one subdirectory. Then they should run ok.

Of course, there is nothing to stop you from buying a new faster computer
and loading Windows 98 back into it, assuming you stil have the CD.

further to what parrot said, you can also run dos in a virtual pc window.
virtual pc is now a free download from microsoft.
I use it to run dos 6.22 and the dos version of pcanywhere.
may the force be with you.
