Windows 11 insider build 22000.132, released on August 12, 2021, introduced an update to Snip & Sketch that renames it to Snipping Tool and ports it to WinUI 3.0 and brings an interface closer to the legacy Snipping Tool. The legacy snipping tool was removed with this build.[9][10][11] Since the update on March 14, 2023, Snipping Tool has another function; you can make screen recordings.[12]

With this update to Snipping Tool (version 11.2308.33.0), we are introducing Text Actions, which detects text in your captured screenshots, making it easy to copy text from any image to share with others or paste in another app. To get started, click the Text Actions button in the toolbar to show selectable text before selecting and copying text with your mouse. You can also click the Copy all text button in the toolbar or use Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to select and copy all text using your keyboard.

With Text Actions, you can also redact sensitive information in screenshots before sharing. Select Quick Redact from the toolbar to automatically hide emails and phone numbers or select any text and select Redact Text from the right-click menu to hide the text.

after upgrading from version 52 to 64 on WIN, there is a bug when using snipping tool. On older version the image would be a perfect crop of the snip from snipping tool but on newer version there is a black border particularly at the bottom and any changes made outside the frame (snip) show up as well (such as marker markings). This is noticeable in dark mode since the snip is white.

Snipping Tool is a screenshot utility included with Microsoft Windows. It was first introduced as an optional download for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and then included in Windows Vista. Since Windows 10 October 2018 Update, it has been complemented by a similar tool called Snip & Sketch, which was later renamed to Snipping Tool as it replaced the original app in Windows 11.

Snipping Tool's first version was available as a downloadable PowerToy for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, which was known as Snipping Tool for Tablet PC, and was released alongside Microsoft Tablet PC on 7 November 2002.[1] It was a basic screen snipping app that took advantage of the Tablet PC pen to "cut out" a specific area of the computer, and then make highlights, annotations, or marks using it.

A new version of the tool was included starting with Windows Vista, introducing it to traditional PC users. It allows users to take a screenshot in one out of several modes and then quickly annotate it without using any other application. The tool would see no updates until Windows 10, which added a delay feature that allowed to take snips with a delay of between 1 and 5 seconds. In future updates, the user interface was further refined with updated icons and snipping modes being moved from the New split button to the new Mode menu.

In Windows 10 build 17661, the original Snipping Tool was also updated to include a note that the app would be removed from the operating system in a future update. After this, the deprecation process started, as new features related to the snipping experience were now added to the newer Snip & Sketch app instead of Snipping Tool.

On the Snipping Tool, you have two ways to redact text. First, on the screenshot, you will have to click the "Take Actions" button, open the submenu next to the "Quick redact" button, choose the information to redact, such as email addresses and phone numbers, and then click the "Quick redact" button will allow the tool to hide email addresses and phone numbers automatically.

Taking screenshots on your Windows computer is easy with the built-in snipping tool. But it can also be dangerous due to a new snipping tool bug that could expose your PC to cyberattacks. Luckily, Microsoft just released an out-of-band security update to fix the flaw.

We have users that are having an issue and not allowing for a screenshot to be taken. The application of the snip tool crashes and does not save anything. Does anyone have any solutions for this? I have read on some Microsoft forums that the tool has issues when running the 22H2 version of Windows 11, but we have almost our entire company running on this version, and only 2 users are reporting issues.

I have not seen this, but one thing comes to mind. Check and make sure that the users in question have a c:\users\*user profile name*\pictures\screenshots folder. The new version of the snipping tool automatically writes new snips to this location in windows 11. If they do have the location, maybe try clearing it out or moving the existing snips. Perhaps it is just having problems writing to that location for some reason...

The same version was installed on the users, and I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the tool. It seems odd that it only happens on a couple of computers to the 100-ish out there. The users have the file location set up correctly, and it was saving with no issues before a few days ago. There is no problem with storage for the computers in question. Thank you for the feedback, tho.

I have found the Snipping tool in Windows 10 to be a big buggy sometimes after a few hours of use, almost like the clipboard is full. I have checked for MS Store updates, but there never seem to be any. A restart always resolves it.

I have the same problem, but not using snipping tool. In fact, it happens almost each time I change windows. I mean : I am drawing in Aseprite (using any tool), then I browse some websites with Firefox => when I come back to Aseprite : no mouse pointer. Sometimes I can see the pointer lagging 15 sec then vanishing.

I re-installed aseprite and my wacom drivers, the problem still remains, BUT this time if I press alt+tab 2 or 3 times (which means: go to other tabs for a while) and return to aseprite, my tools start working again

Yes it does save the screen shot to the network folder but I want the ability to use the SaveAs option available if you click on the notification and open the shot up in the tool. This way I can give it an appropriate name vs something like: Screenshot 2023-08-03 257764.png! Very descriptive is it not?

The snipping tool is basically a screenshot utility that ships with the Windows operating system. The free screenshot tool for Windows provides various modes to capture a screenshot. Here are the types of snips you can capture with the Snipping Tool.

Snipping Tool is a screen capture tool available with Windows Vista, Linux and Mac. It is used to capture a selected area of the screen and save it in a .png, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, or .txt format. It is useful for creating screenshots of anything displayed on the computer screen. The following are some of the features of the screenshot:

There are many reasons why you might want to take a screenshot. Maybe you want to capture a funny moment on Facebook or Twitter, or maybe you need to capture some error information for a customer service issue. Regardless of the reason, the Snipping Tool can be a useful tool for capturing pictures of your screen. The Snipping Tool is a simple, free tool that you can download for your Windows computer. The app can help you take a screenshot of a single window, a rectangular area, or a free-form area. It can also help you annotate your screenshot with shapes, arrows, and text. Finally, you can easily share your image with others, including on social media. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to take image, give the Snipping Tool a try.

Basically, for several reasons, in vista/windows 7 64-bit OS'es when a 32 bit application try to access to C:\Windows\System32\ it is automatically redirected to the folder called C:\Windows\SysWOW64\. Hence, you cannot start snippingtool.exe because it is not present in that folder.

Snagit is an incredibally powerful, feature rich, tool for graphics commincation tasks. One of the best parts, for me, is the library of my screen captures. Markup and other editing capabilities are also easy and powerful. Do the 30 day free trial and you'll have no problem spending the $50 for a license.
