Gait is a biometric which is subject to increasing interest. Current approaches include modelling gait as a spatio-temporal sequence and as an articulated model. By considering legs only, gait can be considered to be the motion of interlinked pendula. We describe how the Hough transform is used to extract the lines which represent legs in sequences of video images. The change in inclination of these lines follows simple harmonic motion; this motion is used as the gait biometric. The method of least squares is used to smooth the data and to infill for missing points. Then, Fourier transform analysis is used to reveal the frequency components of the change in inclination of the legs. The transform data is then classified using the k-nearest neighbour rule. Experimental analysis shows how phase-weighted Fourier magnitude spectra afford an improved classification rate over use of just magnitude spectra. Accordingly, it appears that it is not just the frequency content which makes gait a practical biometric, but its phase as well.

Rhubarb is one of the most widely used Chinese medicinal herbs in China. Fast and accurate identification of official and unofficial rhubarb samples is most critical for quality control of Chinese medicine production. In the present paper near-infrared reflectance spectrometry (NIRS) and artificial neural network (ANN) were combined to develop classification models for identifying 52 official and unofficial rhubarb samples. The measured spectra were compressed by wavelet transformation (WT) and then the ANN classification models were trained with the reduced-variables spectral data. The rate of correct classification was over 96%. The effects of neurons in hidden layer and the momentum were also discussed. Owing to its fast and nondestructive properties, NIRS is a promising approach to identifying Chinese medicinal herbs.

In essence, it means the stargazers have analysed the spectrum of these stars. The spectrum provides information about the chemical composition and physical nature of the stars. Like fingerprints, no two spectra are the same.

Stars can be classified into seven broad types (O, B, A, F, G, K & M) with the O-type being the hottest and M-type the coolest. The spectra for the library were obtained by using the Coudé-Feed 0.9 meter telescope situated at Kitt Peak, Tucson, Arizona, USA and its spectrograph. The Coudé Feed is an auxiliary telescope (a 60" flat reflects the sky onto a 36" parabolic mirror, which directs a converging beam into the 2.1 m telescope Coudé optical train) that feeds a stellar image onto the slit of the Coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope.

"Altogether 6917 individual spectra have been obtained during the time period from 1995 June through 2003 April," Gupta said. The project involved many undergraduate and graduate students at the University of North Carolina.

Now, Gupta and Singh are trying to re-calibrate the first release of the library in 2003 with help from ELODIE, a French library released later in 2005. Singh is at the Lyon University in France to take the project ahead. "Re-calibrating would mean the spectra will be more calibrated to provide more information," Gupta said.
