This past week Mary Van Nortwick, LWVOA Vice President, and Sharon Soucy, Oberlin city council and LWVOA member, submitted testimony in opposition to HB 203 (aka “Stand your Ground”). It is critical that we follow up their action with calls to our own representatives as well as members of the House Policy and Legislative Oversight Committee, which is poised to vote the bill out of committee and onto the floor.

HB 203 would remove the duty to retreat when possible, thereby opening the door to more lethal confrontations in public places. The same bill would also make it easier to legally carry a concealed weapon, not only for Ohioans, but for visitors from other states. It reduces background checks - eliminating them for existing Concealed Carry Weapons people. Safety training is reduced to a low 4 hours, making it scarier still that amateurs are on the streets with guns.

Last week Representative Terry Johnson (Dist. 90), sponsor of HB 203, reportedly said in a committee hearing that no one has expressed opposition to him about the "stand your ground" provision. He says he has only heard opposition in the media. Let's change that tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 18. call Rep. Johnson and tell him that "stand your ground" (aka "shoot first") laws have no place in Ohio. His phone number is 1-614-466-2124. *

Contact other members of the House Policy and Lay Oversight Committee as a concerned citizen or spread the word to friends who live in their districts.

If you haven't expressed your opposition to HB 203 and your support of HB 31 to your own Representative, now is the time to make that call too. You can identify your Representative by going here: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/

Your voice can have an impact. Please take action today! Thank you.
