VOICES ON YOUR MIND
Readers react to ‘slavery’ remarks
Letters to the editor
“You have
lost your moral compass”
Obamacare is the worst thing since slavery?
Seriously, Dr. Ben Carson? Have you seen the movie “Django Unchained” recently
or have you forgotten the history of slavery?
Is a law that protects patients from insurance
dropping them just before cancer surgery is done worse than slavery?
Is a law that bans the practice of discriminating
against patients because of pre-existing conditions worse than slavery?
Is a law that makes insurance companies respect your
premium dollars and spend them on health services, instead of CEO bonuses and
compensation, worse than slavery?
Is a law that allows young adults to receive
insurance coverage through their parents until the age of 26, instead of
playing Russian roulette with their health, worse than slavery?
Is a law that respects and celebrates preventative
medicine, by making these services widely available to all, worse than slavery?
Is a law that says an insurance company cannot jack
up your premiums whenever they want, because their stockholders want more of
your money, worse than slavery?
Is a law that says insurance plans have to be spelled
out clearly without fine print and have to cover at least 10 basic essential
benefits, like pediatric, maternity, ambulance, doctor’s office and
preventative services, worse than slavery?
Is a law that expands health coverage to millions of
Americans who could not obtain insurance previously worse than slavery?
Is a law that helps poor people have basic health
insurance and makes them not feel so ashamed and afraid that they will not seek
medical help, until their lives become seriously threatened, worse than
slavery?
I don’t know where you attended medical school, but I
sense that you have completely lost your moral compass and have chosen to let
political ideology trump your professional and medical ethics. Your statements
are obviously misguided and unfortunate because they have offended millions of
African-Americans. ... DONALD NGUYEN, BEAVERCREEK
