Dear Friend. Would you let any special interest group, let alone the NRA, decide which doctor you can see to tend to your family's health needs?   Of course not.   Yet dictating who sets our nation's public health policy is exactly what the NRA is trying to do.  They are trying to derail Dr. Murthy's confirmation for Surgeon General, solely because he thinks that 30,000 annual gun deaths is a public health crisis.   Please read an excerpt from a note from Dr. Christopher Lillis, former board member for Doctor's For America, below. And please click on the links to participate in the Thunderclap event before Monday at noon, as well as to sign the White House petition.   And please ask your friends and family to do the same. *************** I write to you with a sense of outrage.  Have we gotten to a point in history in the United States where the National Rifle Association is able to choose our Surgeon General? Can a single issue interest group’s paranoia regarding gun legislation really trump the opinions of our nation’s physicians and public health leaders, and that of a previous Surgeon General? Please join our efforts to fight back.  Please reach out to your contact list and ask that they join our Thunderclap in support of Dr Murthy and sign this White House petition so that our voice may be heard.  Senator Rand Paul led the charge in the Senate to derail Dr. Murthy’s confirmation at the bidding of the NRA, and this cannot be taken lightly.  Will every qualified public health leader be held to a new standard: that a mere mention of the word “gun” is a disqualifier from public service? This new style of McCarthyism comes at a time when the United States leads the world in gun deaths and 15 months after the tragedy at Newtown.  After all, even C. Everett Koop, legendary Surgeon General nominated by Ronald Reagan described gun violence as a public health emergency.
