Just created @DaytonDiode. So if you use twitter make sure to follow! We will figure out a way for all the members to use it I guess. Or at least have it RT anybodys tweets with a #diode hash-tag or something like that.

Is there a way for the blog to tweet new blog posts?

I asked that same question to a friend of mine who does marketing at DATV.  He forwarded me a list of contacts at the Dayton Daily, CityPaper, MostMetro and Technology First. I need to get clarification from him.. the list is really long (attached).

Alright, he says we really don't need to be that fancy. We write up a word document saying what we want and send it in an email to everyone on the list. The email just needs to include a brief summary of what our press release says (for lazy publishers) and attach the word document.

Here's a sample:

http://www.free-press-release-center.info/sample-press-release.html

I think we can do this.

Let's just toss around a few versions this weekend and maybe we can get something ready for submission on Monday. How's this for a start?

Dayton Diode To Host Open house

The Dayton based community hackerspace, Dayton Diode is hosting an open house January ?? The public is invited to tour our new space at 111 Front Street, meet current members, and find out more about the many exciting projects the group is working on.

"We're freaking awesome, so get your ass down here. Now." Said founder Joe Mckibben.

Dayton Diode is a place where people with common interests, usually in science, technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialize and collaborate. It's like a YMCA for nerds.

Something about the DMA.

The open house will be held on Saturday, January ?? between 1 and 6pm. The space is located in 1001 East 2nd St, Building 100 Unit 2080. Parking is available to guests on the east side of the building.

Great; I made a page on the wiki:

Edit away!

So do we want to do the open house on 5 Feb to coincide with the other
event? I think this is a good idea. Thoughts?

Ok made some edits. Made the open House go till Midnight. Just to make sure we coincide with the art show as much as possible. Also some other small things.

There have been some edits to the press release. Make sure to take a look at them. We are suppose to release this tomorrow right?

Made a couple more edits; still need to fill in some details, possibly
make some parts a little less silly.

Mad a couple more minor edits; Joe I think you should probably have
the last say on when it's "final" since we all seem to be putting
words in your mouth.

I ran a spell check on it, I'm happy with its current form. Seems the revisions are getting smaller and smaller.

I wish there was a way to avoid the word 'hacking.' When I told my buddy about it the other day his response was strongly.. 'Please don't hack our website!' and he was serious. One of the obstacles we have to overcome is the negative connotation of that word.. if we just choose a different title for our space, we'd be a step ahead in recruiting new members.

Some alternative ideas to hacking (these aren't really synonyms though):
- making
- crafting
- repurposing
- ethical hacking (to emphasize the white-hat, educational nature of
the beast)
- DIY repair

Some alternative ideas to hackerspace:
- makerspace
- community workshop
- tech shop (though this is the name of a company)

Google Sets didn't really turn up anything too useful looking:
http://labs.google.com/sets?hl=en&q1=make&q2=hack&q3=repurpose&q4=repair&q5=solder&btn=Large+Set

Any other ideas? If you see a place where an alternative makes sense,
don't hesitate to put it in to the press release:
http://daytondiode.wikia.com/wiki/Open_House_Press_Release

Good point; we definitely need to work to make the perceptions match
reality: we're about having fun, learning about technology and tools,
creative problem solving and collaborating NOT breaking into other
people's computers without their permission.

I feel like we make enough mention to what the group really is about that i would hope most wouldn't get that idea. I guess one way to resolve the issue is just to define our meaning of hacking from the get go.

But I think it looks great right now.

I agree; we need to get something out the door. Looks like the last
edit was yesterday afternoon around 2 and it was a very minor edit not
in the main body of the release. It's been up for editing for 5 days,
and it looks like four unique folks have done edits. Anybody have any
heart-burn with sending the release as it is right now?

I'd say, unless anyone has major objections, Joe or Chad should spam
their press release email list tomorrow morning. Yes? No? Maybe so?

FYI.. I sent the press release out this morning about 9:15am. I emailed it from the Dayton Diode email account.

Dan from DATV responded and said that he'd put it out on DATV for us. I haven't seen any other responses.
