Linux Flavors

This past Saturday I've attempted to install Linux on that pesky Dell system box, one of the several Eric H. brought over.

Ubuntu loaded just fine on another Dell box, but this one has been cranky and does not play well with Ubuntu or KUbuntu.  It appears that there is a known issue with some Linux distributions and some nVidia graphics chips.  This particular Dell box has a daughterboard driving the monitor and I'd bet there's an nVidia chip at the heart of it.

I downloaded a Debian distro.  It installed just fine and appears to work properly.  But I don't know if Debian is a good choice.  One thing I can say - it does not appear to be as "newbie" friendly as Ubuntu.

If Debian is a good alternative to Ubuntu then that's fine.  Are there any other variants I should look at?

As far as I'm concerned Debian is just fine (Ubuntu is actually based on Debian, so the guts are basically the same).  The other distro I have liked s lot is CentOS.  It is a free (as in beer) version of Redhat Enterprise.

If you want to try to stick with ubuntu'ish feel xubuntu is a very light variant with xfce desktop environment that I enjoyed running on my netbook for a while. Or you might be able to put Ubuntu 10.04, little less demanding on resources.
