This may be unrelated to the openvpn problem. At some point, I also removed Network Manager, due to a conflict with wicd (when I disconnected, NM would reconnect a short time later). Am I correct that wicd is actually a gui for ceni (which is the actual n.m.)?

Here is what I did.. I noticed some said when they connected via command line vpn seemed to work. the problem must resides in the fact you can not import the openVPN configuration. so i pulled out my trusty text editor opened the openvpn .conf file. I noticed in the openvpn connection profile it had an "advanced" tab. with lots of various options. So I attempted to translate all the config options into the advanced tab and what do you know... it worked...

I suspect the issue is with the VPN rather than with Mail. Unless your VPN tunnel is connected to a private network at the other end it is not providing you any privacy. Your insecure traffic must get onto the Internet at the other end of the VPN if it is not connected to a private network.

I'm having this issue on iOS (iPhone Xs Max, iOS 12.4) when Express VPN is set to automatically select the protocol. When I select TCP, it works. It also works when I turn it off.
