In 1960, the Railway Board of India commissioned a study to increase the speed of its trains, which was restricted to 96 km/h (60 mph) on the existent broad gauge lines.[1] A target of 160 km/h (99 mph) with an intermediate stage of 120 km/h (75 mph) was set for passenger trains. Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) started work on the same in 1962 with field trials commencing in 1967.[1] The coaches were manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory at Madras and hauled by diesel locomotives.[1]
On 19 February 1969, the Government of India introduced a new express train capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) as announced in the railway budget.[3] On 1 March 1969, the first Rajdhani Express with nine coaches was flagged off from New Delhi to Howrah with the return journey commencing on 3 March.[4] The train completed the 1,450 km (900 mi) trip in 17 hours 20 minutes and was the only such train in operation till 1972, when the second Rajdhani was introduced from Mumbai.[1]
Rajdhani, derived from the Sanskrit means "capital" and later, with subsequent up-gradation of the tracks, new Rajdhani expresses were introduced connecting major cities with the capital New Delhi.[5]
In July 2021, Indian railways started upgrading the coaches of Rajdhani express to new Tejas coaches with enhanced features.[10][11] These coaches are equipped with newer air suspensions, bio-toilets, Wi-Fi, fire alarms, CCTVs, reading lights, dedicated power sockets, automatic doors, passenger information system, improved interior and designed exterior.[12] The trains which are equipped with all new coaches are known as "Tejas Rajdhani" express.[13] Indian Railways plans to introduce Tejas coaches across all Rajdhani trains in a phased manner.[14]
The trains are amongst the premium services operated by Indian Railways and regularly gets a higher priority on the railway network.[15][16] Passengers are served optional meals by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the menu of which could include morning tea, breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner depending on the duration and timing.[17] These trains have fewer halts than other express trains with stoppages only at prominent stations. Dynamic pricing is applicable on fares across all Rajdhani trains.[18]
Rajdhani Express is a superfast broad-gauge train service in India connecting New Delhi(either New Delhi or Nizamuddin)with other important destinations, especially state capitals. Rajdhani means "The Capital" in Hindi.
The train,Rajdhani express was introduced on March 1, 1969(Howrah-New Delhi with a WDM-4 diesel engine). It was for providing high-speed connections (up to 120 kmph-that broke the speed barrier of 100kmph). it has been increased to 140-160 kmph. The next Rajdhani, from New Delhi to Bombay, was introduced on May 17, 1972 with a regeared WDM-2 diesel from Ratlam. later, double-heading(using two diesel engines) was done to haul more coaches at a good speed. Electric engines(WAP-4s and now WAP-7s)are now allotted for the present Howrah and Bombay(Mumbai) Rajdhanis, replacing the diesels. Speed varies depending upon the particular track section) from various railway stations in the capital city of New Delhi to the capital cities of various states in India (or, in certain cases, prominent cities within the state-like Ahmedabad in Gujarat)the train serves).
These trains have higher signal priority than other trains on the Indian railway network and are fully air-conditioned. The passengers are provided with complimentary meals during the journey. Depending on the timings of the train, lunch, high tea, dinner, morning tea and breakfast are served. Almost all of these trains offer three classes of accommodation; First Class AC with 2 or 4 berth lockable bedrooms, Second Class AC 2-tier with open system berths (bays of 4 berths + 2 berths on the side) but provided with curtains for privacy, and reading lamps Second Class AC 3-tier (bays of 6 berths + 2 berths on the side) with no privacy curtains or reading lamps.Early Rajdhanis had Chair Cars as well.
Currently there are 18 pairs of Rajdhani Express trains. These trains have fewer stops than other express trains which are generally prominent cities of any state like Allahabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Kanpur, Nagpur, Dhanbad , Bokaro , Jhansi, Jaipur etc. Some cities have more than one Rajdhani Express serving them. Mughalsarai , Gaya , Bhopal and Jhansi are served by the number of Rajdhani Express trains (6 each).
Presently the train travelling long distances, running at an average speed of around 80 kmph takes considerable amount of time and depending on how fares are structured, has the potential of losing to airlines. (Please see : Fastest trains in India). On trunk routes at times the airline tickets are lower than Rajdhani Express tickets. The standard of highways in India is also improving since the roll out of NHDP by the Government of India. In such a scenario the train could be seen to be high - priced and below the global standards of luxury and speed thus leading to shifting of upper class and business passengers from Rajdhani Express,Shatabdi Express and now,the Durontos to the airlines and to the roads[1]. Indian Railways is attempting to take various corrective actions including improvement in on-board services and menus, to try to mitigate this situation. New high-speed LHB coaches are manufactured by Rail Coach Factory for these services.
But now due to the rising airline fares, Rajdhani Express trains are gaining more profits and passengers than before. Can any one say where is the dirty kitchen at Guwahati Rly station from where the food is supplied in Rajdhani Express from ghy to and fro Refer News Channel DY365 dt 27/06/2017 news reporting at 7.30 PM. where the dirty kitchen is shown and the stale food of previous days stored open in dirty for next packing to serve in train. Where is the Railway Officers.
I travelled by the August Kranti Rajdhani Express from Mumbai Central yesterday. This train also sports Tejas style coaches now. I entered Mumbai Central after almost 4 years, and what struck me immediately was the fantastic polished granite flooring on the platform. More on the train, the journey and the on-board service:
Dinner wasn't served until 2034hrs; I shot off a complaint on the RailMadad portal and the Pantry Manager, Train Manager were at my seat in less than 10 minutes apologizing, pleading to forgive their "bachcha" for the late service since the staff was in Holi mood etc. Like in all such cases, they gave a dressing down to the pantry steward asking him to take good care of me. I point blank told them that I didn't want VVIP treatment and that my intent of complaining was to improve their level of service.
After a few minutes, I got a call from West Zone Control, who wanted to know if the issue was resolved, if I wanted action to be taken against the pantry staff, and asked for my suggestions for improvement. I told the caller that the intent behind my complaint was on-time food service and nothing else, and they closed the complaint with an advisory to the pantry staff.
I am not a fan of those polished new platform floors. They only look good. The surface is slippery. All it takes is a little carelessness or a lack of warning after it's just been mopped for someone to have a bad tumble. Not everyone wears a pair of grippy sneakers.
Unfortunate to hear about the food. Food on the Rajdhani is a highlight as they tend to overfeed you. That said, some of the private food vendors on some express trains do beat the Rajdhani for variety.
