Toyotasays 0-60 is 8.4 seconds... but all of us that has a CTS knows it's faster... i clocked mine with a friend (so we were 2 in the car) and a bit uphill... i got 8 seconds exactly, but i only tried ones, so mabye i could get a little better with practise.
best time posted was an Italian car mag which made 0-62 (100kmh) in 7.15 secs. I used to have Top gear article in which TS was faster 0-60 than CTR in slightly dump conditions, and took much less than 8 secs 0-60 (i forgot what it was - i suggest you search the forums for it)...
Making a claim that your CTS can get to 60 in under 8seconds is . That would make it faster than a MKII MR2 and that we all know cannot happen - not without A LOT of money spent on the CTS.
I would like to take this opportunity to retract all my previous statements about the CTS, I was wrong to label all CTS drivers childish morons... I now realise it's only a select few that cannot discuss their car rationally, and without resorting to petty insults (yourself included).
However I will reitterate once again that the CTS (Corolla) is not as quick/fast/rapid/pacey/off shovel as you like to think it is. I also feel confident that they're are a large number of people in agreement with me on this matter.
Never once have I said that the CTS was '*****, rubbish, slow,' or indeed a 'girls car' .... however these comments have been thrown my way from simply stating time and again that the CTS is not as quick as the owners like to imagine. :o
I cannot deny the CTS is a very good car for it's price range and quick to boot, now am I missing something? exactly WHY is it that a few CTS people get very touchy, very quickly about it's capabilities?
The 2023 Toyota Corolla compact sedan has gotten a series of updates that make it more powerful, even more economical and safer. Not only that, but there's also some fresh new looks and a simplification of the lineup. For 2023, the new Corolla is available in three trims: LE, SE, and XSE. Gone is the previous entry-level L-badged Corolla.
On the outside, the 2023 Corolla is recognizable thanks to its reprofiled front and rear bumpers, new (and slightly angrier) LED daytime running lights that are now featured across the lineup, and 18-inch gloss graphite-colored alloy wheels on the SE and XSE trims. The SE and XSE also feature a gloss mesh pattern used in the lower portion of the front grille and a new black rear diffuser at the bottom of the rear bumper.
In what can best be described as some fowl artistic license, Toyota says the new headlights are "reminiscent of the eyes of a bird of prey." That'll give 2023 Corolla owners something to, erm, squawk about.
The 139-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder that previously served as the Corolla sedan's base powertrain was relatively miserly when it came to using fuel but was equally stingy when it came to delivering anything resembling peppy acceleration. To remedy that, the 2023 Corolla sedan now comes standard with a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder that was once optional on higher trims.
That engine is coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission, and Toyota says the 2023 Corolla sedan shaves a full 2 seconds off its 0-60 mph time. Keep in mind, however, that in our testing, it took a 2019 XSE-spec Corolla with the more powerful engine (the same one that's now standard across the range) 8.8 seconds to reach 60 mph from a dead stop. That's not exactly what you'd call brisk, so don't expect face-melting acceleration from any Corolla that doesn't feature a GR badge on its rump.
Perhaps more impressive than the extra horsepower is the added bonus of extra efficiency. The 2023 Corolla returns an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in city driving and 41 mpg on the highway while running on a diet of regular unleaded. For comparison, the 2022 Corolla sedan returned a best of 30 mpg city and 38 mpg on the highway.
There is more to the 2023 Corolla than what's under the hood. An 8-inch touchscreen is now standard on all trims and features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XSE trim level benefits from a new 7-inch fully digital gauge cluster, while the SE and LE trims have to settle for a smaller 4.2-inch display that rests between old-timey physical gauges. Audiophiles will be pleased to hear that a JBL sound system is an option on the SE and XSE trims, while rear occupants with charge-starved phones will appreciate the addition of two standard USB-C ports.
Lastly, but potentially the most enticing to buyers with safety on their minds, the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 bundle of safety items is standard on every Corolla sedan. It comes with updated versions of features like lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, road sign recognition and automatic high-beam headlights. Newly added optional safety gear includes a proactive driving assistance system.
We loved our time in the GR Corolla and crowned it as the current king of hot hatches (at least until the Civic Type R arrives). Its outstanding 300 hp (223 kW) engine and AWD system are seriously impressive. The rest of the automotive world seems to largely agree.
Motortrend is part of that group and it just finished a series of tests with the GR Corolla Core equipped with the Performance Package. The biggest surprise? Instead of doing the 0-60 sprint in 4.9 seconds as Toyota advertises, the best MT could manage was 5.4 seconds.
Only a small number of cars in the USA use three-cylinder engines, and most do so for the compact packaging and good fuel efficiency such an engine configuration provides. In the GR Corolla, its 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine delivers 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, numbers not commonly associated with a three-pot. A maximum boost of 25.2 PSI, along with features like a part-machined intake port, ensure this is no ordinary engine. Its distinctive growl also gives the GR Corolla a unique personality. Maximum power is realized at a heady 6,500 rpm, while peak torque is on tap between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm.
Manual hot hatchbacks are becoming disappointingly rare; add AWD to the mix, and the only hot hatch with three pedals is the Toyota. The Golf R no longer has a manual for the 2025 model year, and smaller hot hatches like the Ford Fiesta ST are long gone. That makes the six-speed manual in the GR Corolla a device to savor. It features rev-matching, but more importantly, the mechanical and weighty shift action makes it a joy to use.
I find it comical how much praise the GR corolla gets for being so "fast" while people will still say the GR86\BRZ need a turbo and they are sooo slow. The Corolla is about 0.7 seconds quicker 0-60. That is actually pretty sad considering the abusive 6k rpm AWD clutch dump it takes to get there.

It seems like every car sold in the US these days has an engine option with over 200 horsepower. This is the natural result of continuous power increases from the energy crises of 1973 and 1979 until now. My first thought in demonstrating this was to show a plot of how the powerplant in a GM car changed over the years. The only problem is that GM changes construction methods and model names so much, there aren't really any GM cars that have any continuity between the 60s and now, even though they might have the same nameplate. The one exception might be the Chevrolet Corvette, but that's not an everyday car.
A good example turns out to be the Toyota Corolla, which has been made since 1966. Yes it's had some significant revamps, but it's been produced continuously in one form or another since it came out, has always been made by the same parent company, and has always had the same name. Here's the Corolla's base engine maximum power output over time:
Here's my question: why do we need all these power increases? As an example, the 2016 Honda Accord (a car for a conservative person if there ever was one) can be had with 278 horsepower! That's more than the Corvette of 1991, and 80% as much as the Corvette had until 2005. Granted, the Accord is a decade or two newer than those cars.
These power ratings are significant for one main reason for road driving: power-to-weight. This is what determines acceleration. So even though many cars of the 60s had a lot of power, their acceleration wasn't particularly good because they were so heavy. The Accord and Corvette mentioned above have very nearly the same weight (3200 lb).
There is also the question of how fast the car can go. This actually has nothing to do with acceleration, only drag. But for most cars, the power to go the maximum speed (aka the speed limit) is not a whole lot. Let's just do a rough calculation of what it might be. Actually, time out.
