The sermon, "Good News", by Bishop Will Willimon and especially   his emphasis on cross bearing reminds me of a story told by Charles Allen.

During a Sunday morning service of worship at First United Methodist Church in  Houston, Texas, the congregation was singing the closing hymn, "Take My Life and Let It Be". As the congregation was lustily singing the second stanza, "Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I with - hold", the pastor standing behind the pulpit said he glanced down at the millionaires sitting on the front pews and commenced openly laughing, wondering if they really knew what it was they were singing. Who knows?

As all of us know, it's one thing to sing about Jesus, it is quite another thing to follow. Experiencing the life changing Good News of our Lord is costly.

This Week on Day1 Radio

The Rev. Dr. William H. Willimon, bishop of the North Alabama
Conference of the United Methodist Church and the author of 60 books,
concludes his powerful three-part series of sermons based on Mark 10.

In this week's message, "Good News?" Will opens our eyes to the
utterly challenging responsibilities that Christ's disciples must
face--including suffering and death. Be sure to visit http://day1.org/

Amen Billy! I was recently introduced to the term "lustily" as one of Wesley's advice on how to sing hymns--what a description!! Your story is powerful--when one knows the cost they sing it lustily without being coached or coaxed! Thanks always for your wise and knowing comments!
