The provocative sermon by Dr. Scott Weimer reminds me of a stewardship emphasis during my teen years in my neighborhood church.
The chairperson of stewardship posted the names of all church families on a very conspicuous wall in the church sanctuary. By the name of each family was recorded their financial pledge for the year and their giving to date. During every quarter at Sunday morning worship, this chairman would go to this list and read aloud every name on the list and their record of giving.
That was the first and last time I witnessed such a stewardship emphasis.
I recall those were quiet and sobering moments of worship. No one moved. All stared intently at the list and said nothing. And, there was no jubilant dancing down the center isle. It was the "Great Depression". Our family was large. My dad was a hard worker. Knowing my parents, they gave their very best.
This procedure was similar to the stewardship emphasis of the Pharisees? Everybody looked and listened. Yet, while some Pharisees openly dropped in big bucks, a poor widow unknowingly amazed all the worshipers that day. She gave her very best. All were witnesses to her giving.
