This Week on Day1 Radio:

We're pleased to welcome back the Rev. Dr. William H. Willimon, bishop
of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church,
headquartered in Birmingham. The author of more than 60 books, he
taught at Duke University and Duke Divinity School for 20 years.

His sermon, "The Peril (and the Promise) of Being Met by Jesus," is
based on Mark 10:17-31. Will explores the invitation Jesus extended to
the young man to follow him--and this man's unwillingness to pay the
price of discipleship. Be sure to visit http://day1.org to listen to
the program or read the sermon transcript online. Then share your
responses with us here.

Many thanks.
Peter

Dear Peter:

I will get into the sermon by Will Willimon with another mail. This mail is more personal. I note that he graduated from Candler, class of 73. I graduated in 1954. Will is the bishop for my son and his church. My son is on the faculty at Auburn and is a member of Red Hill UMC near Dadeville, Alabama.

While at Candler in the early 50s, my wife and I along with our son lived on campus in the Veterans Village. It was called Mudville. During the rainy season, it lived up to its name. It was also next door to the Protestant Radio Center on North Clifton Road. Furthermore, we spent a lot of time at the Varsity Drive In, your next door neighbor in Atlanta. We were back on campus in 04 for my 50th. Anniversary.

This weekend, my wife and sister and I plan to attend the Fox Family annual Reunion at Vienna, West Virginia. I believe I have told you my mother's mother was a Yoke. I have met some of this side of the family. They are wonderful people. Since you are related to the Yokes, we may be distant cousins.

I thought you might wish to know of these things. Keep up the great job.

Billy

Dear Billy,

Great to hear from you and all the connections we have! They must have just been building the PRTVC building when you were there. I was able to work there my first month here in early 2001 before we moved to our current location, right across from the Varsity (though I try to avoid that as much as I can!). The old center was quite a magnificent building, though it had deteriorated a good deal by the time I was there. (In fact, I worked in an overheated office my month there in March and early April 2001--the thermostat didn't work. The Emory building people came and checked on the furnace and shut it down--the old steam system was just about to blow up, they said!)

But what an amazing history in that building--so many wonderful radio, TV, and film productions produced over the  years--all of them now in our Protestant Hour archives at the University of Georgia, and hopefully we will raise enough money to restore and digitize all that good stuff.

I'm sure we're related some way, Billy. My branch of the family is spelled Yoak--is that the same? Please give my best regards to West Virginia while you are there!

Take care, Billy, and thanks for sharing.

All best,
Peter
