OK, so I did a quick bit of research on things related to the two proposed sim ideas.  I had a couple questions and suggestions.

USS Esperanza: You mentioned Borg Slipstream as a way to travel.  I'm not sure what you might be referring to, but here's what I found out on both.  The Borg used Transwarp conduits, but the network was destroyed by Future Janeway at the end of Voyager.  Slipstream Technology is a whole other thing, which also proved to be unstable in Voyager.  However, perhaps we could circumvent these canon limitations by doing two things.  We could say that this new ship uses information brought back by Voyager about Borg and Slipstream tech both, used to construct the first Slipstream capable starship.  We say that the Slipstream drive works, but takes a while to charge up/recalculate the course, and is only good for "short" (duration) jumps, so that way it stays truer to the notion of both technologies, and doesn't make us intergalactic-powered yet.  The crew knows the risk of potentially getting lost/stranded, but the risks are deemed worth it.  Sounds like a good all-around sim, trouble and new worlds all in one.

USS Quetzocoatl: A Q-Ship is a fun idea, I've seen such things in a Trek RPG before, Starfleet Battles I think it was.  The original WWI/II concepts I read about were anti-submarine/anti-piracy measures, and the closest thing Trek has is Romulans and Pirates.  We could also invent a new minor race causing trouble on certain shipping lanes or borders.  The ship could use a combination of holograms, sensor decoys, and other high tech to fool sensors, but would also need some tight defensive systems such as armor and defiant-style weapons to fight back with.
This could be a good ship to go out and get into scraps with, but it's somewhat of a limited purpose ship.

It could be a good ship to go out on to try to recover a stolen ship also?

Going the other route Phillipa suggested, it could also be a hunk of junk that really is an old ship, but we've used the higher tech only in a few special locations to hide the actual weapons. Our goal is to recover the real starship we ought to be in, perhaps the Esperanza?

So we could do a set up such as Esperanza was built but jacked by pirates en route to the launch point.  Out to salvage her honor, the crew of the Esperanza boards up on the Quetzo to go lure the pirates in and get the Esperanza back.

Just a couple thoughts to keep the momentum rolling.

By the by, the AQSG reorg seems to be moving ahead.  The goal is to consolidate, so no more numbered fleets.  We'll probably just all be under one common fleet banner, whether or not the sims are on the same list.  The general thought is that all being on one list might give us all more interaction and inspiration, and that the list for the Thunder Fleet (only active sim list right now) would be where we'd like to have folks congregate.  The Trek Division will just be called "Thunder Fleet" and we'll just add sims as people create 'em or revive old ones.  If you guys are up for it, we can head over there when things are official, or we can keep on on this list.  Our ideas might be fun for others too though, so we might get some more peeps onboard for the Great Space Coaster mission(s) here.  I'd recommend we hop over there, but if anyone has a reason we shouldn't, I'm not da boss of youse.  Speak up!  Let's try what sounds fun!  =0)

I like the Esperanza idea.  Provided we can stick to a course of play and not allow ourselvs to be sidetracked by player shenanigans.

side wacked?  I wouldn’t mined that. Have a starfleet shopping mission?  Or have a ship’s name that I can pronounce or even spell...

K, bear with your senile ol' man a moment, I have an idea on the front of encouraging peeps to stay focused.

Howsabout an achievement/reward system in place?  We're all old hands here, so maybe we don't need as much of it, but as we get new players maybe it would help?

What I'm talking about goes to social gaming and MMO games and so on, how they have an Achievement/Reward/Unlock system.  As the player does A, they can then unlock B.  As each player completes one of these we add the appropriate "badge" to his/her character's profile.  This gives them permission to do things like add a new NPC, run a second character, suggest a mission, whatever.  Also counts towards consideration for promotion.

This would be aside from the mission outcome awards which we may or may not qualify for, a la what the AQSG lists/what we used to do.  That's more of an RP award (which we are basically awarding across the board as the mission allows anyway, so it's not much of an achievement as written) but still worthy if we did something heroic enough to merit it.

I'm looking to not only re-engage our own motivations, but also to engage new players we might get lucky enough to have down the line.  We'd be unique and hopefully fun for people to stick with.  Just a thought, but I have a start on it at a hidden wiki page on the Esper site.  Just goofin' around like it was a notepad.  Still needs clip art icons for awards.  Anyone feeling artistic?

One more question:

By the way, who feels up to running this sim?  Like seriously running it: beating posts out of us, liasoning with AQSG etc.?  Experience says unless one of us jumps in and stays in, things will fall kinda flat.  I'm just helping get this kicked off since there is some interest.  Experience also says I will fall flat at some stage and that won't do to keep us rolling along.

Me, me, ME, pick me!!!   ::jumps up and down::

But seriously though.  I'm not interested in being CO.... BUT

I'd be very happy to do the liaison and admin and to keep throwing pies to keep us here if need be (and if possible!)

Perhaps we could set up a "Command" which would include whoever wants to play CO, plus the ASQG liaison, plus Frosty initially and then when he passes the pies on, we could insert say, the XO or 2CO into his chair... after we'd taken off the zimmer attachment and the rake?  ::ducks::  ;p teehee.  Sowwy Lovely Boss!   ::HUGS::

That way we could share stuff between us when one or another got *side-whacked*....  (other than Philippa and me who'd be doing that for fun on the SIDE-lines, with appropriate pie-type armaments!!)  YAAY!!  ;D

Love Jools

I think I could take a try at the center seat for a change. a little help from the XO could mean two people instead of one have the responsibility of keeping things rolling.

I'll be a troublemaker!

From the perspective of evolution, the great questions of life have hopeless answers. A person is a bunch of chemicals that by chance come together for a period of time and then will fall apart again at some time. There is no greater meaning to life. It, more or less, leaves out the possibility of a soul or spirit and life continuing after the death of the body.

I think over the last year or so, we have all made more trouble than anything else!  XD

Seriously tho, we have one vote for each concept so far, and my vote of "they all sound fun".
If we are gonna do this, let's hear what anyone would prefer to do.  With 8 of us we should be able to keep this thing floating.

Me: Anything
Jules:
Chris: New Trek (I keep coming up with "de-fat" as the ship nickname, sorry!  Now I'm making trouble)
Ted:
David: Esperanza
Phillipa:
Marion:
blpeter1: Quetzo

Positions:

Jules: CMO?
Phillipa: CMO?
David: Paramedic?
Ted: XO
Chris: CO
Marion: Troublemaker!
blpeter1: Chief of Sneaky Starships?
Me: Undecided yet, possibly helm officer and maybe another NPC to keep thing interesting.  I'll pick last.

No offense Marion, but I think the Tal Shiar thing has been done to death.
