OK, so I did a quick bit of research on things related to the two proposed sim ideas. I had a couple questions and suggestions.
USS Esperanza: You mentioned Borg Slipstream as a way to travel. I'm not sure what you might be referring to, but here's what I found out on both. The Borg used Transwarp conduits, but the network was destroyed by Future Janeway at the end of Voyager. Slipstream Technology is a whole other thing, which also proved to be unstable in Voyager. However, perhaps we could circumvent these canon limitations by doing two things. We could say that this new ship uses information brought back by Voyager about Borg and Slipstream tech both, used to construct the first Slipstream capable starship. We say that the Slipstream drive works, but takes a while to charge up/recalculate the course, and is only good for "short" (duration) jumps, so that way it stays truer to the notion of both technologies, and doesn't make us intergalactic-powered yet. The crew knows the risk of potentially getting lost/stranded, but the risks are deemed worth it. Sounds like a good all-around sim, trouble and new worlds all in one.
USS Quetzocoatl: A Q-Ship is a fun idea, I've seen such things in a Trek RPG before, Starfleet Battles I think it was. The original WWI/II concepts I read about were anti-submarine/anti-piracy measures, and the closest thing Trek has is Romulans and Pirates. We could also invent a new minor race causing trouble on certain shipping lanes or borders. The ship could use a combination of holograms, sensor decoys, and other high tech to fool sensors, but would also need some tight defensive systems such as armor and defiant-style weapons to fight back with.
This could be a good ship to go out and get into scraps with, but it's somewhat of a limited purpose ship.
It could be a good ship to go out on to try to recover a stolen ship also?
Going the other route Phillipa suggested, it could also be a hunk of junk that really is an old ship, but we've used the higher tech only in a few special locations to hide the actual weapons. Our goal is to recover the real starship we ought to be in, perhaps the Esperanza?
So we could do a set up such as Esperanza was built but jacked by pirates en route to the launch point. Out to salvage her honor, the crew of the Esperanza boards up on the Quetzo to go lure the pirates in and get the Esperanza back.
Just a couple thoughts to keep the momentum rolling.
By the by, the AQSG reorg seems to be moving ahead. The goal is to consolidate, so no more numbered fleets. We'll probably just all be under one common fleet banner, whether or not the sims are on the same list. The general thought is that all being on one list might give us all more interaction and inspiration, and that the list for the Thunder Fleet (only active sim list right now) would be where we'd like to have folks congregate. The Trek Division will just be called "Thunder Fleet" and we'll just add sims as people create 'em or revive old ones. If you guys are up for it, we can head over there when things are official, or we can keep on on this list. Our ideas might be fun for others too though, so we might get some more peeps onboard for the Great Space Coaster mission(s) here. I'd recommend we hop over there, but if anyone has a reason we shouldn't, I'm not da boss of youse. Speak up! Let's try what sounds fun! =0)
