“Well that was real subtle.” Michael drawled as they walked. “I don’t know what you see in that man Ray.”

“Shaddup Michael.” It was a good thing that H’Rhaedrol Barr had a mediteranean-like complexion, it meant no one could see when he blushed.

'Careful, be focussed, dangerous...' An empathic wash came out of sickbay. And then like a wave retreated back in. But leaving a warm glow in it's wake.

[Bridge, USS Damocles]

“Captain Anderson, Commander Pressman. The curative immunoglobulin is available. I would request permission to treat yourselves and the crew present.” He spoke to both officers, but his grey gaze had settled on Ellie.

Ellie had no way of stopping the way the colour rose to her cheeks under that gaze.  "Permission granted" she responded unsteadily.  "I will show a good example"  She got out of her chair and moved towards Saveron, tilting her head to one side and offering her neck for the hypospray.

Saveron inclined his head in acknowledgement of the Captain’s willingness and retrieved his hypospray and one of the ampoules from the satchel. Loading the hypo he applied the point to Ellie’s neck and pushed the button, all the while very careful to keep his fingers from coming into contact with her skin. “I must appologise for my earlier behaviour, Captain.” He said quietly, seriously, as he withdrew the hypo.

"Why?"  Ellie responded, matching his quiet seriousness.   "I'm sure it's me who owes you the apology.  I was the one behaving foolishly.  You were simply protecting me from doing harm.  I appreciate that, it was a noble thing to do, thank you."  She was affected by his necessary closeness in order to keep this conversation between only the two of them but she was convinced that he could not be affected himself.  Ellie was sure that he never had been and that she had made more of a fool of herself than just that which was due to the virus.  She was miserable and had humiliated herself but she couldn't succumb to either feeling.

Right now she had her duty to perform and Rob's crew, HER fellow crew, to take care of.  She refused to allow herself to look at Saveron.  If she did, if she even glanced at those deep, serene, grey eyes, she knew she would melt and then *everyone* would know.  She had to force the whole issue of her feelings for the Vulcan from her thoughts. Pulling herself back to sit with a rod-straight back in the command chair, her body-language was awkward and forced, her expression rigid and strained as she tried to contain her emotions.

If only he weren't so close.  If only he didn't smell so nice.  If only she could be as good at holding herself back as he was.  She tried an old exercise Maya had taught her of deliberately replaying memories in her head.  The plan was to distract yourself.  Usually you were supposed to think happy thoughts, but the only things that stung Ellie's concentration back into place were painful scenarios, she thought again of Ramius' indifference, trying to compare it and force herself to feel the same numbness she'd eventually learned to feel about that.  The problem was that in thinking about the details, she only managed to convince herself this time it was different.

That was the last thing she was trying to do.  Distracted in quite the opposite way to her intention, the memory of the distance in Ramius' eyes sparked her to glance involuntarily into Saveron's.   Her control lurched and faltered.   She DID see a totally different response in the Vulcan's eyes.  His serenity seemed to have been replaced with a deep sadness and there was no indifference, she was sure of a genuine regret.  Ellie was immediately confused again, her own eyes, her face, all begged the question her lips couldn't ask.

<Parental Pressman>

"Don't worry about the vaccination, I'm sure it won't harm the babies any more than the original virus itself has already done"  Leigha was suddenly much clearer of thought when presented with a possible threat to her children.

“That is correct. The immunoglobulin has passed all necessary compatability testing for all known humanoid life forms.” Saveron assured the expectant parents. “However you will require two ampoules to ensure full treatment for yourself and your conceptus, Miss Brown.” And the Vulcan was already loading the first ampoule as he approached Leigha.

Leigha stood still to allow the vaccine to be instilled.  She reached for Damien's hand as he watched with concern and squeezed his fingers.  "They'll be okay.  They are tough... They're Pressmans!" she teased gently, nestling into his arms as soon as Saveron had finished and she was released from the obligation to sit still.

<Paternal Pressman?>

Clearly the couple were not keeping the news a secret. “I believe that it is traditional amongst humans to offer congratulations on the announcement of a conception, please allow me to do so.” He said gravely, glancing from Leigha to Damien and back again. “We should schedule an appointment for your first ultrasound, Miss Brown.” He added.

Leigha got excited at the idea of this.  She began to chatter vivaciously about how far into the pregnancy she should set it for and how many she might have and how wonderful it would be to actually *see* them.  She said she couldn't wait and badgered Damien to fix the date together because she wanted him there too.

Did the Captain realise that, for those sensitive enough to sense it, she projected some of her emotions? It was a dangerous thing in some ways, and Saveron knew that eavesdropping on another’s emotions was morally wrong, but it gave him a guide for interactions that could be so much more difficult due to the cultural and species barrier.

She seemed almost confused when he offered his apology, and made hers in turn, then seemed to turn from him, not just physicially but emotionally as well, he could feel the withdrawal. It brought a disappointment in him that was surprising in it’s sharpness before it was instinctively suppressed. It was inappropriate. His face never showed anything other than his usual serenity, of course.

His eyes were different though. Eyes were the windows onto the soul, and as Ellie’s efforts to distance herself backfired and she looked up at him there was a look that might be interpreted as sadness there. Confusion perhaps, wistfulness. He could feel the cultural and species barrier acutely. And he could feel her own confusion, could see it in her pale blue eyes, like the sky on Earth, as she looked at him, suddenly focused her attention on his as a moment before she had focused away. Did Terrans have any idea how expressive their faces where? And hers was only a foot away.

Vulcans believed in truth and honesty. If they lied at all it was by omission. There was risk in any social interaction, the risk of offence, of rejection, of misunderstanding. It was there in the forming of a new friendship,  it was greater when one sought something deeper. It was more complex between different species. But someone had to take it. Saveron believed that Ellie thought she had offended him by her actions, her very obvious expression of affection and possessiveness under the influence of the virus. The truth was quite the opposite. It would be preferable to have a discussion privately, but the moment and the opportunity might not present itself again. He elected to take a risk.

“I… did not object.” The Vulcan doctor said quietly – only those nearest would have heard – and as gravely as if he was discussing some aspect of his work. He held Ellie’s gaze for a moment, searching it, vulnerable, then before she could reprimand him for impropriety he turned away and started re-setting his hypospray, all business. Only the fact that the points of his ears had gone green indicated that what he had said was anything other than proper.

Of course, Vulcans never expressed eagerness, excitement or appreciation, those things were emotions and expressing emotions was like dropping your pants in public. It implied a juvenile lack of self-control. If asked anything from “Can you help me shift these heavy stores” to “want to go and catalogue the library which I know is like your favourite thing to do on your day off” the answer was always the same; ‘I would not object’. No Vulcan ever said ‘Yes please’.

<Parental Pressman>

"Don't worry about the vaccination, I'm sure it won't harm the babies any more than the original virus itself has already done"  Leigha was suddenly much clearer of thought when presented with a possible threat to her children.

<Paternal Pressman?>

<Damien?>

It was fascinating to note that Miss Brown had apparently decided that there was a reasonable probability that she was carrying more than one foetus. Saveron knew that the statistical probably of such was much higher in Terrans than in his own species – the deserts of Vulcan were harsh enough without trying to carry a multiple pregnancy – and he wondered if it was wishful thinking or is she truly did have some insight into her condition. Some other species approached Vulcans in their awareness of their internal physiology – Klingons had an internal redundancy and could shut down injured organs and route functions to the backup – but he had been under the impression that it was not a feature of that so very numerous and ubiquitous species. They seemed to do everything by their vaunted ‘gut instinct’. Perhaps this was similar. Fascinating.

“Miss Brown, may I ask a question?” Saveron said as he loaded another ampoule for Damien.

<Lovely Leigha?>

“I am curious as to why you think that you might be carrying more than one conceptus.” He said gravely. All that had been determined at this point was that she was pregnant.

<Lucky Leigha?>

“Perhaps we should schedule your initial ultrasound sooner rather than later, to determine the veracity of your assumption?” He suggested, blunt as ever.

<Pressman want to butt in?>
