Intro to GIS in R

Date: 11/14/2025
Location: DataLab Classroom - room 360 Shields Library
Description: Intro to GIS in R is a workshop designed to get you started doing Geographic Information Science (GIS) in R. It is, roughly speaking, the R version of Next Steps in QGIS. We will cover setting up R for GIS, getting data in and out of R, data transformation, filtering, and geoprocessing tools, as well as some basic mapping.
Concepts Covered: R, R Studio, Spatial Data
Speaker:
Elise Hellwig is a Research Data Scientist at the UC Davis DataLab. She has her masters in Agricultural Ecology and has worked on a wide variety of projects from database management, to environmental justice mapping, to text analysis.
Prerequisites: This workshop assumes you have some experience with R. If you are new to R or would like to brush up on your skills, the DataLab R Basics Reader is a great place to start. It also assumes you are familiar with GIS concepts like vectors, rasters, coordinate reference systems etc, which is covered in Next Steps in QGIS.
Software Required: Bring a laptop with R and R Studio installed. These are free and open source. R is a programming language and R Studio is a tool made by Posit that makes writing R code easier.

Whenever possible, #maptimeDavis Workshops will be recorded and posted on the #maptimeDavis YouTube channel. #maptimeDavis Studio will not be recorded to encourage open discussion. Weekly reminders will be sent on the Geospatial Email List.

#maptimeDavis Workshops and Studio are a product of UC Davis DataLab’s Spatial Sciences Research Cluster and are supported by the contributions and participation of our community. Please send questions to Michele Tobias mmto...@ucdavis.edu
