Description

Spatiotemporal asset catalogs (STAC) are growing in popularity as a way to make data available in a standardized way, but getting started with these tools is not always straight forward or clear to people who did not set them up. In this workshop, we hope to demystify working with STAC catalogs. Learn how to connect to, search, and download data from a STAC in R.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be familiar with STAC terminology, be able to connect to a STAC, and search and downlaod STAC data.

 

Concepts Covered:  STAC Catalogs, APIs, Aerial and Satellite Photography, Remote Sensing, NDVI, NDWI, R, Programming

 

Speakers: Michele Tobias (UCD DataLab) & Alex Mandel (Development Seed)

Michele Tobias is a geospatial data scientist with a background in geospatial methods for ecology. Michele earned her PhD from UC Davis in Geography where she studied California’s sandy beach ecosystem with traditional phytosociological methods and innovative remote sensing tools and was a postdoc at the UC Davis Information Center for the Environment. In her current position as a geospatial data scientist at UC Davis DataLab, she applies geospatial tools to new avenues of research across disciplines.

Alex Mandel is a geospatial engineer with an emphasis in open source solutions. He currently works at Development Seed, interfacing between scientists and data providers working with earth observation data, helping ensure access to data as a key component of solving problems with open science. Alex has a PhD from UC Davis in Geography, and is a participant in the STAC and OSGeo communities.

 

Location: Seminar Room (room 1025) in the UC Davis PSEL (Physical Sciences & Engineering Library). Zoom details will be emailed upon registration for people wishing to attend online.

 

Prerequisites:  The instructors will assume participants have an introductory understanding of programming, in particular with R, and that they have an introductory understanding of spatial data formats, in particular vector and raster data.

 

Software: Please download and install R and RStudio before the workshop.

 

 

Whenever possible, #maptimeDavis Workshops will be recorded and posted on the DataLab YouTube channel. #maptimeDavis Studio will not be recorded to encourage open discussion. Weekly reminders will be sent on the Geospatial Email List.
