Today marks 50 years since John Chambers and Rick Becker sketched the basic foundation of R. At the time, the project that became S and then R was envisioned as an interactive environment that would define a consistent interface to tools written in Fortran.
In a sense, that is still what R is today but it has also grown to be so much more. Take a minute today to read the very brief recollections of the origins of everyone’s favorite environment for data computing:
