Hi all! Just a reminder that today at 10:00, #maptimeDavis is having a workshop on spatial data in R. If you’ve been using the Raster package, you’ll learn about using Terra instead. If you’re new to all of it, you’re getting started at an ideal time, so join us and speed up your learning process. More details below.

Subject: [geospatial] #maptimeDavis Workshop: Spatial R: Migrating from Raster to Terra
Spatial R: Migrating from Raster to Terra (#maptimeDavis & D-RUG)
May 31 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Migrate your R scripts using R’s raster package to terra!
Please RSVP via our Registration Link
Description
The first generation of r spatial packages (raster, sp, rgdal, rgeos) have gone the way of the dodo, and the second-generation packages (terra, sf, and stars) are here to stay. If you haven’t made the transition
from raster to terra, now is the time. And the good news is, it’s probably easier than you think. This
workshop compares the two packages, provides direct function and syntax translations, and links to many resources to answer any further questions you might have.
Learning Objectives
• Get a sense for the functionality of the terra package as a whole.
• Be able to translate existing code from deprecated packages to terra syntax.
• Know where to find more information about terra.
Concepts Covered:
Speaker: Elise Hellwig
Elise Hellwig is a research data scientist at the UC Davis DataLab. She holds a MS in Ecology from UC Davis where she investigated spatial variation in climate impacts on California’s agriculture. Elise is dedicated to bringing rigorous data and statistics practices to new groups, from college students to the CA State government. Her interests include spatial data analysis and visualization, Bayesian regression, and natural language processing.
Location: Seminar Room (room 1025) in the UC Davis PSEL (Physical Sciences & Engineering Library). Zoom details will be emailed upon registration for people wishing to attend online.
Prerequisites: Participants should have previous experience programming in R and understand the basics of spatial data (such as poplar file formats like vector and rater and coordinate reference systems)
Software: Participants should download and install recent versions of R and R Studio.
Whenever possible, #maptimeDavis Workshops will be recorded and posted on the #maptimeDavis YouTube channel. #maptimeDavis Studio will not be recorded to encourage open discussion. Weekly reminders will be sent on the Geospatial Email List.
#maptimeDavis Workshops and Studio are a product of UC Davis DataLab’s Spatial Sciences Research Cluster and are supported by the contributions and participation of our community. Please send questions to Michele Tobias mmto...@ucdavis.edu

Yes! It’s being recorded. There’s a link to our YouTube channel at the bottom of the forwarded email. I’ll upload all of this quarter’s videos in a week or so.
