Earthworms help out in our gardens everyday by aerating the soil,
feeding on harmful fungi and bacteria, and combining elements in the
soil with organic matter into plant available humus. But those
earthworms are free agents, going to the places in your garden that
they please, working in the seasons that they prefer, and leaving
their castings (worm poop) where they happen to be eating. If you've
ever wanted to have a bit more control of some earthworms, perhaps to
have them compost all of your kitchen vegetable scraps, or to
accumulate some of their castings for potting soil or seedling
starting mix, here's your opportunity to get started!
P.J. Dunn's Working Worms Farm in Galt is a local operation that
raises composting earthworms. Unlike the nightcrawlers that live in
the soil of your garden, these worms have adapted to living in manure
piles, decaying organic matter, and the leaf litter that strews a
forest floor. This makes them a much better choice for putting into a
worm compost bin on your patio (or even in your house) since they can
survive warmer temperatures and want to live closer to the soil
surface than nightcrawlers and other soil-dwelling earthworms.
On this outing, we'll go to the worm farm in Galt, pick up some worms,
and take a tour of his operations. It's a great time to pepper an
expert on worm raising with questions as well :-).
Trip Details:
We'll meet at the worm farm at 11:00AM. If people want to carpool,
that's a possibility. I can meet people as early as 10:00AM. Let me
know where you're coming from and we can arrange a place that's
convenient.
Touring the operation and asking questions is free
A pound of worms is $20. *Be sure to call or email me by Thursday so I
can let the farmer know how many worms to harvest*
If you want to purchase a stackable worm bin, he sells The Worm
Factory for $85
The Worm Farm is located at 27395 Kennefick Rd, Galt, CA. Here's a
