I understand from the help that Mind Control will freeze a planets society which I'm assuming is used to halt a society at it's peak production of a certain element. Is there any reason other than that to use it for? And are there any consequences other than you have to kill off some of your population?

Some people use it to stave off that phase at which planets cannot produce enough food.

If a planet has already experienced a food shortage I assume it's too late to do so? I had a food shortage but I was able to send resources to it & pull it out of the subsidies. However, I now have a famine ring around it (I'm assuming thats what the red dashed ring about a half inch around the planet is since I couldn't find that in the help). I'm keeping enough food there with trading & farm subsidies. So it no longer says anything about a food shortage on the planet. Would it be smart to mind control or did I miss that bus & I should just keep with the trade runs & other stuff.

I pretty much always use it to wedge all of my planets about 78 or so, and it seems to work nicely. Without it, the general strategy is to run a bunch of freighters (I usually try 20-40) from that planet, which will tend to collect food from nearby planets and keep it going. Trouble is, long term eventually *all* of your planets will turn into this and the expanding ring of starving planets mean the freighters go farther and farther to keep them alive.

Just mind controlling at around 75 so that it finishes around 80 or slightly less seems to work and you can run a stable empire with tens of thousands of planets.

Thanks a lot for the information. I'm definitely going to expirement with this. Probably start mind controlling most but a few capital planets so I can still build fleets at higher society level since someone told me that society level of the planet that the fleets are built at calculates into combat.
