Game freezing for long periods...

Dave,

For the last few weeks whenever I'm playing it doesn't matter whether I'm browsing the map, managing planets or fleets or whatnot... But the game will become completely unresponsive sometimes for up to like 30 seconds. It's a recent development and during that time all other sites and tabs work and top doesn't appear to show any high usage of CPU on my machine & I've also checked my disk IO & memory usage at the time. It's not a huge deal but it sometime keeps happening like the moment it unfreezes, I click on something or try to pan the map & it will just do it back to back.

Like a complete game reset as in everyone back to square one? 

I'm wondering if maybe it isn't the extremely large players that are scripting... I'm sure they're hitting the servers like mad... It seems to be that it's waiting for a connection to the server or something. The game is getting really exciting right now, but on the other hand the game got really skewed because of unfair play early on & still going on a bit (not going to go farther than that... I promised not to stir up drama again) and there are a lot of players getting rolled over by player/players doing such BS so while I'm enjoying the game maybe a reset would be good for all the new players. It would be my first time playing from the very beginning so could be pretty interesting.

I am neutral to a reset, while I am in the middle of big campaigns in the present galaxy, it does not bother me if we needed reset either (The restart is always exciting you never know were you are, or who will be close too!).

Yep... I'm with dklu. I'm large enough I'm not gonna get wiped out, but probably be a lot more fun for the smaller & newer players.

So, maybe there should be a reset and have a little peace for a while :)

Yeah, I've been busy with other things.  Hmmm.  I could do a reset in...  2 weeks?  I could go earlier or later if someone has a compelling reason.  February 17th would work fairly well for me.

Not a compelling reason, but I'm not going to undertake anything significant in the game until you do a reset.  I think some others may be at a similar point.

2 Weeks works for me... I just started a new job so I"ll be pretty busy for next bit. JJ & I made peace... Been destroying xolotl so I'm ready to reset and start fresh.

Looking forward to first play from the very beginning of the galaxy instead of starting hemmed in on most sides. Others i've seen are being started completely blocked in pretty much with max of 50 planets if theyr'e able to generate resources before someone else starts. So while I could have a lot of fun destroying people, it's just like I've said before... There's no room or fairness for people just joining. I know a few people who started near me and even though I offered to help they eventually told me they were not going to play anymore because they couldn't do anything but build a few planets and then get wiped out by people who are using scripts

Oh, I'll post something definitely.  I'm dealing with getting stuff working again on my laptop after I installed Mavericks.  :( 

I've build the new galaxy, I'm currently trying to place the first capital.

Yeh... Just logged in. All my planets & other crap are still there but most of it won't load. Looking forward to getting back to it though! Will be my first run from the very beginning.

Just been super busy with new job and family stuff.  Not sure why the turn isn't running.    This weekend is spoken for, should have some time on the next one. 

I've built the new galaxy, just have to put it up and deal with the inevitable problems.

The Dave's Galaxy server has entered orbit around a black hole at near light speed. The time dilation effects mean that we now only see once a month turn updates. Lots of time to plot strategy...

Actually, I'm actively working on it.  I've made changes to get it working with Django 1.8 (was running like..   1.4?), got mouse wheel support going, working on multitouch...

Hehe, pulled the site down last night, surprised someone noticed so quickly.

Didn't mention anything here because I don't want to build anticipation or anything.  Keeping it low key.

Going to start on an Ansible script for building the new server tonight.  DG needs configuration management pretty desperately.  I'll probably put the whole thing up on my github account too.

Exciting!! Will be patient I promise :) I'm starting to learn ansible... We use Puppet at work & ansible seems sooooo much more simple. What changes are going on that make configuration management necessary? Are you constantly rebuilding or does it take more than 1 server to keep DG up & running?

Haha, I brought Ansible to HP (afaik), so Neckbeard-ery assistance probably not required.

There's a bunch of finicky dependencies I never want to have to think about installing again.  Also, people kept asking for the ability to set up their own server, so I think that's a good thing as well.

I might split the db off to a separate server, but it's certainly not required (Current Linode's have like 4x the memory that DG used to run in)

I started on refreshing the code base last year, got pretty far, but not quite to running again.  Might have some time in a few weeks.
