Only Adrian Currie/CEO and myself/Financial Agent attended our first attempt at holding the 2023 annual general meeting, on June 8th, so we intend to try again in the fall. Meanwhile, we'll do what we can to encourage members to turn out.
Community Association If we again fail to meet the quorum (five members) in the fall and the Davenport Electoral District Association (EDA) is formally dissolved, we could continue unofficially, perhaps calling ourselves the Davenport Greens Community Association.
EDA Freedom Organizing as a community association may not lead to a rejuvenation of the federal organization in Davenport sufficient to re-register/re-create an EDA. It's difficult to be sure of why participation has fallen so sharply since the heyday of 2019, when membership in the EDA was at a historic high; and it's difficult, without such insight, to take steps to correct the drop in participation.
Last weekend, I attended a small gathering at the home of longtime friends of Elizabeth May, where $15,000 was raised in about fifteen minutes through a 'Dutch auction'. There was no organized discussion during the two-hour cocktail party, nor did anyone raise a hand when the auction was done and Elizabeth opened the floor to questions. The assembled guests believe that the Party has turned a corner and is on the mend.
Not me. Like many members, my support for the GPC has weakened—not just by the scandals of the last two years, but by the cover-ups and resignations.
My hope in the GPC rests completely in the belief that the Ottawa-centric model can be replaced by a distribution of power down to the EDA level. My reasons are explained in the attached document, "Distributed Governance | A Green Model for Politics in Canada". If you read it and disagree, I challenge you to respectfully explain why keeping to the status quo gives you hope.
Elizabeth May insists that the Party is neither left nor right, which is correct insofar as we welcome people of all persuasions. (A poll of Freedom Convoy members put the GPC in solid second place in popularity behind the PPC.)
The disparity between viewpoints will continue to simmer under the lid of central control. If EDAs were free to learn what works in their ridings, to rise or fall depending on how we meet local political aspirations, our regional and national meetings could authentically reflect the breadth of the GPC's appeal. We would be better positioned to become the grassroots party described in our Constitution.
2022 Financial Report The attached financial report has yet to be approved by the membership (of course). It would be great if the Davenport Greens find new wings; then we could vote for who gets the coveted job of Treasurer.
Find the light. Make a move. Democracy takes effort.
